Justus Theophilus Timothy was born on 23rd February 1848 and baptised the following month in the parish of St Giles without Cripplegate in the City of London. He was the son of Jane Timothy, formerly Cassanet, and her husband David Timothy, a feather and bedding merchant. The family lived on the street called Barbican. Justus was his parents' youngest child, having seven surviving older siblings, the eldest of whom was over 24 years his senior. The 1851 census finds Justus living with his parents, siblings, and a servant at 1 Redcross Street, on the corner with Barbican.
By 1861 the family had moved out to Peckham in the parish of Camberwell, to the south of London. The 1861 census finds Justus living with his parents, a brother, and a servant at 5 York Grove in Peckham. Justus's mother died in Peckham in 1863.
Justus was educated at King's College School, and in 1866 he was admitted to King's College itself. He did not complete his degree at that university; the following year he transferred to Cambridge University, being admitted to Corpus Christi College in October 1867.
Back in London, Justus's father died in 1868.
Justus completed his degree at Cambridge in 1871. The census taken in April of that year finds Justus lodging with a clergyman and his family in the small village of Chignall Smealy in Essex. A couple of months later, in June 1871, Justus was ordained a deacon and appointed to the post of curate to the parish of St Peter, in Colchester, Essex. He served there for about three years.
Justus appears to have decided fairly soon after his appointment to Colchester that a permanent career as a clergyman was not for him. He had correspondence in 1872 with the church authorities about relinquishing his Holy Orders. The following year he was elected a member of the College of Preceptors, by which time he was attached to the London Institution, a college based at Finsbury Circus.
The 1881 census finds Justus at Bloomsbury Chambers on Dyott Street in the Bloomsbury area of London, described as a private tutor.
By 1891 Justus was living at a small private school run by a Charles Wood and later by Charles's wife Catherine (Kate). In 1891 they were based at 11 Richmond Terrace in Lambeth, before moving just around the corner to 338 Clapham Road, where Justus appears living at the school in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses. The school was named in the 1911 census as Lawn House School.
Justus died in the south-western suburbs of London in 1919, aged 71.
