Sophia Ingall was baptised at St Lawrence's Church in the town of Reading, Berkshire, on 13th December 1835, daughter of an actuary called Charles Ingall and his wife Emily. The family had recently moved to Britain from Jamaica; Sophia's older brother had been baptised in Jamaica in 1834. Sophia's father was from London, whilst her mother had been born in Jamaica. The family did not stay long in Reading after Sophia's birth, and by 1838 they had moved to London.
The 1841 census finds Sophia living with her parents and siblings at Palatine House in Stoke Newington, Middlesex, in the northern suburbs of London. By 1851 they had moved to Hammersmith in the western suburbs, living at 6 Grove Villas, Hammersmith Grove. The 1861 census finds the family living at 10 Mecklenburgh Square in St Pancras.
On 20th April 1865, aged 29, Sophia married David Evan Timothy at St Mary's Church in Hornsey, Middlesex. He was nearly twelve years her senior. They do not appear to have had any children.
David described himself as a gentleman when they married. He had previously described himself as a wharfinger (harbourmaster) and worked as a merchant. He had spent some time in Australia in the 1850s, and had been a partner in various commercial enterprises.
The 1871 census finds Sophia and David living at 16 Ladbroke Grove Road in Kensington.
The 1881 census finds Sophia visiting her siblings at 39 Hamilton Terrace in Marylebone. David has not been found on census night; it is entirely possible he was abroad.
By 1893 David and Sophia had moved to Australia, living at Blair House, 207 Glebe Point Road in Sydney. David died there on 27th October 1893, aged 69. Sophia survived him by nearly three years. She died on 18th June 1896 at Parramatta in New South Wales, aged 60.
