About David Jansohn/Janson

David Jansohn [or variously Yanson, Janson, Johnson] was born likely around the year 1740, born likely in or near Germany or Holland. He is likely the David Jansohn that arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1763 and is listed in "Pennsylvania German Pioneers: Publication of the Original Lists of Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia from 1727 to 1808", Edited by William John Hinke. A corresponding Passenger Ship Record of the Ship "Pallas" is found listing David Jansohn on the passenger manifest, arriving with 198 passengers from Rotterdam on 25 November 1763, last from Cowes with Richard Milner, Master [Captain], which corroborates the 1763 arrival to Philadelphia. David Jansohn's signature on the passenger manifest in "flourishing German script" is mentioned by researcher Olin Glynn Johnson in 2001.

David Jansohn is also listed on the Pennsylvania Early Census Index in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania in 1763. It is not yet known how long he remained in Pennsylvania, but he apparently migrated to North Carolina sometime around the mid-1770's. Sometime prior to 1800, David Jansohn's family migrated to Wythe County, Virginia, where his sons Palser, George and William surveyed tracts of land. David Jansohn's will is found in Wythe County, Virginia records in 1809, listing his wife Catherina [maiden name unknown, some say "Edwardson" (proof needed)] and children.
