David Hank of Monroe County, VA and Gallia County, Ohio, was born in Rockingham County, Virginia on March 5, 1788, the first child of Williams and Susannah Berry Hank, and named for his grandfather, David Berry, of Rockingham County, VA. When David was three years old, his parents moved the family to Greenbrier County, Virginia - now Monroe County, WV, and he lived there until after the death of his mother, July 23, 1837. When he was twelve years old, he and his mother and two year old sister Mary went on a horseback ride from Monroe County back to "old Rockingham" for a visit with the Berry's. In April 1813, David bought 80 acres of land from his father and mother, and in 1837, he and his second wife, Elizabeth, sold this same piece of land to his younger brother Jehu. David Hank then moved his family to Gallia County, Ohio, where he bought a farm and lived until his death, May 4, 1854. Although he spent his entire life on a farm, he was a tailor by trade. He was an enthusiastic Sunday School worker and was the founder of many such schools in Virginia. He worked in conjunction with his younger brothers, William and Jehu, who were ministers.
