The Obituary of Dana C. Flanagan as it appeared in The Unionville Republican, Wednesday, April 11, 1945: Dana C. Flanagan, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Flanagan, was born at Howland, Missouri on February 20, 1884, and died at his home in Unionville, Missouri on Wednesday, April 4, 1945 at the age of 61 years, 1 month and 14 days. His death came after an illness of only a few hours of a heart condition. The funeral was conducted in the Comstock Funeral Home at two o'clock, Friday, April 6th in the presence of a large audience of sorrowing relatives and friends by Rev. J. D. Noland, Minister of the Christian church, and a lifelong friend. Because of a late message that other relatives were coming, the burial service in the Unionville cemetery was not held until Monday at 3:00 p.m. He is survived by his wife, Gladys; his mother, Mary Jane Flanagan of Minneapolis, Minn.; a son, Dana Flanagan, Jr.; a step-son, Lt. (jg) John Carr Gulick of the U. S. Navy, and now based in Hawaii; a sister, Mrs. Daisy Cook of Southgate, California; sister, Mrs. Jesse White of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister, Mrs. Norma Flanders of Long Beach, Calif.; brother Robert M. Flanagan, of Houston, Texas; sister, Mrs. Mary E. Selleck, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; two grandchildren--Michael Dean and Patrick Gene--of Independence; and by many other more distant relatives. The deceased was married on June 8, 1910 to Lyda Pemberton Hall, who preceded him in death on September 1, 1932, and to this union one son--Dana, Jr.--was born. On June 9, 1937, he was united in marriage to Gladys Houston Gulick. No children were born to this union. Mr. Flanagan began his business career early in life, first in the employ of the S. Gross Store in Unionville, and later he had charge of the H.L. Holman Merc. Co. Store in Exline, Iowa. For a few years he was with the Marshall Field & Co. store in Chicago, and came home to enter the H.L. Holman Merc. Co. Store as a part owner, where he remained on active duty until a little more than a year ago, when he sold his interests there and with Mr. Ora Robinson organized and operated the R & F store, in which he spent an active day preceding his death the following night. The deceased was not a member of any church, but he consistently tried to live the life of a good citizen, dealing justly with his fellow men according to his best understanding. He was unpretentious, quiet and lived a well ordered life. He preferred the surroundings of his home, and unless he was at his place of daily business he was invariably found in or about his home. He took much interest in registered dairy and beef cattle, and generally found time to devote considerable attention to these. He belonged to no lodges or fraternal orders, but did maintain a membership in the Unionville Country Club, and the Unionville Chamber of Commerce when these were active organizations. Although never conspicuous in his outside activities, he always had a deep interest in current affairs . . .
