Facts and Events
Colin DUNLOP of Carmyle was born 7jan1706 and died 3aug1777 (Latter Day Saints). Colin was born 7feb1706 as the 6th son of 16 children of James and Lilias (Provosts of Glasgow). Colin was born 7jan1706 as 4th son and 13th child (stirnet). Colin married 18jan1741 Martha Bogle of Hamilton Farm, Glasgow (Latter Day Saints). Martha was christened 28may1719 and died 1768 (Provosts of Glasgow). Martha was daughter of John Bogle and Janet Miller (daughter of Matthew Miller of Glenlee, Kirkcudbrightshire) (Provosts of Glasgow). Martha was, according to stirnet, based on "Old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry", daughter of John Bogle of Hamilton Farm (ca.1679-1752) and ? Murdoch (daughter of George Murdoch, Provost of Glasgow) and granddaughter of John Bogle of Hamilton Farm and ? Millar (daughter of Matthew Millar of Glenlee); this seems doubtful. Colin was also called Colen and Collen in records. Portraits of Colin Dunlop of Carmyle (1706-1777), Virginia merchant, and his wife Martha Bogle or Dunlop of Hamilton Farm, painted by Gavin Hamilton, were lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition 1894 by Colin R. Dunlop. The handsome town residence of Colin (b. 1706) still stood in 1894 on the south side of Argyll St., the 2nd east from Dunlop St. (catalogue). Born 7feb1706, he was the 6th son of the 16 children of James Dunlop of Garnkirk and his 1st wife Lilias, only child of Robert Campbell of North Woodside. On 18jun1741 he married Martha, daughter of John Bogle of Hamilton Farm, and his wife Janet, daughter of Matthew Miller of Glenlee. Martha Bogle was baptised on 28may1719 and died in 1768. Of this marriage of Colin Dunlop and Martha Bogle there were born 2 sons and 1 daughter: James, b. 27oct1741; Janet or Jeany, b. 28apr1743. On 14aug1773 she married Thomas Donald of Geilston- a son of this marriage was the well-known Glasgow citizen, C. D. Donald, Commissary Clerk of Lanarkshire: John, b. 3sep1755. Later he became provost. Provost Colin Dunlop died 13aug1777. His firm of Colin Dunlop and Sons was one of the larger importers of tobacco in the city and wealthy. They weathered the storm which broke over the city when the American colonies revolted, but came to the ground 16 years after the provost’s death in the financial crisis of 1793 (Glasgow past and present).
