Colin Dunlop Donald was commissary clerk of Glasgow (1817-1824) and Lanarkshire (1824-1858), in which position he was the successor of Benjamin Barton (1769-1817). Colin married Marianna/Marianne STIRLING (d. 1825), daughter of John Stirling (stirnet), either 12dec1811 or at Cardross, Dunbartonshire 7dec1811 (IGI).Colin Dunlop Donald and Marianne had 5 sons and 5 daughters (old country houses of the old Glasgow gentry). There is a biography of Colin in the book "Memoirs and portraits of 100 Glasgow men". Scottish archives have the will of “Colin Dunlop Donald, writer in Glasgow and Commissarry clerk of Lanarkshire, spouse of Marianne Stirling or Donald”, reg. 18oct1859 at Glasgow. Dunlop, writer, 37 Virginia St., ho. 30 St. Enoch Sq. 1841 Colin Dunlop Donald, writer and commissary clerk, 37 Virginia St., house 30 St. Enoch Sq. and C. D. Donald, jun. writer, 37 Virginia St. (glasgowstory). Colin Donald, writer, born abt 1781, Lanarkshire, lived with his family and 5 servants at St. Enochs Sq., Glasgow, in 1841 (census). In 1851 Colin D. Donald (b.1779) lived with his children Colin D. Donald, jnr. (b.1816 Glasgow), writer, Marianna (b. 1822) and Ann G. (b.1826) at 163 St. Vincent St., Glasgow (census). In 1855 the writers Colin Dunlop Donald and sons were at 44 West Regent St., Glasgow (Slater’s Directory). From "Annual indexes to the services of heirs in Scotland 1860-69": Reg. 12dec1862.
