Gone To His Eternal Home - C. J. Winfrey Passed Away in Corder Saturday
Clayborne Jackson Winfrey, son of Nancy Cary and William P. Winfrey, was born in Carroll County, April 17, 1861 and departed this life at Corder, July 14, 1945 at the age of 84 years, 2 months, and 27 days. He had been failing in health for some time but was able to be up and around the house until Saturday morning July 14th he was stricken with a severe headache. A physician was called and did all he could for him but he gradually grew worse and passed away at 1:45 Saturday afternoon. He was married to Miss Phoebe Cowles of Coloma about 58 years ago. To this union nine children were born four girls and five boys. His wife, three daughters and one son preceded him in death. His wife passed away six years ago last January. The surviving children are Delmar, James and Bert of Corder, Clayborne of near Carrollton and Mrs. Grace Westerfield of Lee's Summit. Two sisters, Mrs. Hester Wallace of Lamine and Mrs. Allie Ritzinger of St. Joseph survive him. He is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, four brothers and one sister. He was a faithful member of the Presbyterian Church of Corder for many years always present at every service until his health failed. He had resided in Corder for about 40 years and had many friends who mourn his passing. He will be sadly missed by his children and grandchildren who loved him dearly. He was a loving father and grandfather, a good husband and a friend to all.His former pastor Rev. Crockett conducted the funeral services from the Presbyterian Church in Corder Tuesday afternoon July 17 at 2:30 o'clock. The many friends and relatives with the loving tribute from the pastor and the beautiful flowers, gave evidence that he was held in high esteem by all. He was truly a good man, a Christian what more can be said. His remains were laid to rest in the beautiful Corder cemetery. His grandsons, several in Army and Navy uniforms acted as pallbearers.

- ↑ Son of Head, Clayborn, his wife Phebe; sons Delmer, James and Albert; and daughters Angie and Nellie were shown as living with his mother Nancy Elizabeth Cary Winfrey.
- ↑ Clayborn's farm was washed away in the Missouri River flood of 1901. The flooding caused the river to reroute its path. Clayborn's land, which had been measured from the original river position, now belonged to another person. He moved his family to a new farm in Lafayette County.
