Mrs. Nancy E. Winfrey, 82 years old, a pioneer resident of Carroll county, died Wednesday at the home of a relative in Dover, MO., and was brought here Friday for burial. Mrs. Winfrey was injured several days before in a fall and her health failed until her death.
Mrs. Winfrey, who was Miss Nancy Cary, before her marriage, was born on a farm 4 1/2 miles east of Carrollton. Her father died when she was a small child.
She was married in 1854 to William P. Winfrey of Carroll county, and the couple lived on a farm east of town until Mr. Winfrey's death in 1888. Mrs. Winfrey then made her home with her children. Six children, four sons and two daughters survive: Jackson Winfrey of Dover, MO.; J. D. Winfrey, Independence, MO.; Creed Winfrey of Colorado; Matthew Winfrey of Kansas City; Mrs. Mary Kester of Boonville, MO.; and Mrs. Ritzinger of Pike county, MO.
The body was brought here overland from Lexington, where Mrs. Winfrey was visiting her son at the time of her death. Funeral services which were attended by a large number of relatives and friends, were held Friday afternoon at the Wakenda Baptist Church and Interment was in the Wakenda cemetery. Rev. Robertson conducted the services.
