Born Dec 5, 1892 per Baptism Certificate from Our Lady of Sorrows RC Church, Bklyn; Baptized on Dec 25, 1892; sponsors were Karl Gresser and Bridget Gresser.

Drove an ammo truck with the 77th Division (France) during World War I. Worked as a Stationary Engineer at an ice plant owned by the Rubel Corporation; Nick Gruebel was also an employee. He collapsed a couple of times on the job, and made Nick promise not to tell his wife. Died in January 1943 of a heart related cause. Nick was married to Margaret's sister, MaeMae. - CFS

According to Rosemae Ebert, her mother Wilhelmina (Charles' sister), told her that Charles was gassed during WWI and all his teeth fell out - 1/98 ltr from Martha Gilhooley.

Lived on 4th floor of 118 McKinley Avenue, then 57 Glen Street, and finally 55 Glen Street, Brooklyn.

His sister, Mary (#142), used to curl his hair; said he was "quite a devil. If he dated the same girl twice, he wanted his hair done the same way as for the previous date." - Harriet Stokes

Marriage certificate and letter from St. Gabriel's RC Church in Brooklyn indicates that Margaret's oldest brother, Joe Flynn was best man, and Charles' sister, Minnie, was the Maid of Honor. The Flynn's resided at 541 Pine Street (between Crescent St and Euclid Avenue, Fulton and Jamaica). The Schretzmann's resided at 236 Ashford Street.

Certificate of Marriage (#11399,Bklyn,1917) gives Charles' occupation as Engineer, says they were married by the Rev. Thomas Mortell, and indicates that Margaret was born in Manhattan. The certificate is signed by the participants.

Death Certificate (#1483,Bklyn,1943) indicates that Charles (SS#102-07 -2032) died at St. Mary's Hospital at 4:50AM on Jan 17 1943, having been admitted six hours earlier. Cause of death was Pulmonary Edema and Cardiac Decompensation. He also had metral valvular heart disease - probable rheumatic. He was stricken on Jan 15th. He and Margaret were residing at 55 Glen Street, and he worked as an engineer at an ice plant. The certificate is signed by his wife, and the undertaker was John Metzner, Inc. Certificate also gives names of parents, his dob - Dec 5 1892, and his burial - Jan 20 1943.

Charles and Margaret are buried in the National Cemetery at Pinelawn, LI.

1920 Census [Jan 3 1920](ED 1390, Sheet 1, Line 58, FHC #1821179) shows 118 McKinley address; Charles worked as an engineer for a hotel. Margaret's parents were both born in Ireland. Last name is spelled with two "n"'s.

His application (December 3 1936) for a Social Security card gives his address as 55 Glen Street, and lists his employer as the Rubel Corporation and its address as Fulton Street and Waverly Avenue in Brooklyn. It also gives his dob as Dec 5 1892, and has a dash in the space for a middle initial.

Middle initial ("J") was found written on an ancestor chart in my mom's papers - CFS
