Charles Ingram was born on 24th November 1800 and baptised five days later at Grantham in Lincolnshire, son of Mary Ingram, formerly Tow, and her her husband John Ingram, a miller. Charles was their youngest child. The family had previously been removed under the poor laws from Grantham, having been declared to be the responsibility of the neighbouring parish of Londonthorpe. It would appear that after Charles's birth they returned to Londonthorpe, where Charles's sister Mary married in 1814, and where Charles's mother died in 1815, when Charles was fifteen years old.

Charles's father then appears to have gone to live at Foston, where Charles's sister Elizabeth lived. Charles's father died there in 1817, when Charles was only sixteen years old.

Charles was married on 17th May 1824, aged 23, to Frances Weaver. They married at Wilsford, about eight miles north-east of Grantham, where Charles's sister Mary had settled with her husband.

Charles and Frances settled in Wilsford after their marriage, having seven children baptised there between 1824 and 1845, although the eldest died as a baby. Each census from 1841 to 1871 finds Charles and Frances living in Wilsford with some of their children or grandchildren, and with Charles working as an agricultural labourer.

Charles died in 1879, aged 78. He was buried at Wilsford on 15th January 1879. Frances survived him by seven years.
