Facts and Events
According to a Geilear researcher, Kate married John B. Geilear about 1865, then married Jacob Fitting in 1878. Based on an interview with Frank Louis Geiler, there were as many as 3 daughters of the Fitting marriage: Mame, Lizzie and Maggie. This means that she is most probably the Kate Fitting, in the 1880 US Census living on West 38th Street in New York City age 34 from Germany. The head of household is Jacob Fitting, age 54 from Germany. The children are [her children by first marriage?] John Henry Geiler age 12, Maggie 10, George 8, Lewie 5, [Jacob's daughter] Annie 13; and a 3 month old daughter [by this marriage?] Lizzie Fitting. {ED 395, p. 19} In the 1900 census for Brockton, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, George W. Geilear is 27, born June 1872 in New York (father New York, mother Germany), occupation 'pattern maker'. His wife Ella is 26, born 1873 in Massachusetts, (father Maine, mother Massachusetts). They have been married 7 years and have 3 of 4 children living. The children are Ola M., 6, born 1893 in Massachusetts; Gertrude 5, born 1894; and George W., 1, born 1899 -- all born Massachusetts, father New York, mother Massachusetts. Also in the same house, but separate family are Catherine Fitting, a widow age 53, born Aug 1853, Germany, immigrated 1855, with 5 of 6 children living. Her son John B. Geilear is 30, single, born 1869 in New York (father New York, mother Germany) [occupation unreadable]. Her son Louis J. Geilear is 25, single, born New York, occupation 'pattern maker'. Her daughter Minnie (or Mame) G. Fitting is 16, single, born Mar 1884 in New York (father New York, mother Germany), [occupation unreadable]. They are living at 7 Erie Ave. {ED 1110, sh 8, dwelling #108, household 157 & 158} NOTE: I am not sure why she shows 5 of 6 children living, as I believe all six are living: George, John, Louis and Margaret Geilear; and Lizzie and Mame/Minnie Fitting. She shows 6 living in 1910. In the 1910 census for Brockton, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, George Geilear is 39, born New York (parents Germany), married 18 years, works as '(dier?) manufacture(?)'. His wife Ella M. is 36, born Massachusetts (father Maine, mother Massachusetts), with 3 of 3 children living. The children are Ola M., 16; and Gertrude, 15 -- both born Massachusetts, (father New York, mother Massachusetts). Also in the household are Katherine Fitting, [George's] mother, a widow age 62 from Germany (parents Germany), immigrated in 1870, with 6 of 6 children living; and Margaret Finlayson, servant, born Scotland. {1st ward, ed 1150, sh 12a, dwelling 196, household 247} NOTE: His brother John is also living in Brockton. In the 1920 census for Brockton, Plymouth Co., Massachusetts, George W. Geilear is 48? NY, treasurer for 'motor'(?). His wife Ella M. is 46, born in Massachusetts. Son George W. [Jr], 20 Massachusetts, works as 'clerk motor center'. His mother Catherine Fitting is a widow, age 77, born Hesse Darmstadt, immigrated (1857?). His mother-in-law Emma Wright is 64, widowed, born Maine. His (grandson?) (Clifton W. Badeau?) is 15, born Vermont. {ed 40, sh 21a, dwelling 29, family 32} NOTE: Page is very difficult to read on HeritageQuest. |
