Carl was taken as an apprentice by his father since his abilities did not promise a great future. Later he accepted positions in various cities and finally established himself in Berlin, Germany by opening a ciogar store at 121 Alt-Moabit St.

Carl went bankrupt in 1884. His brother, Emil, vouched for him and paid his debts, but not without interest. As a result, there were always differences between both of them. After more then 30 years, Carl repaid his debt.

Later, Carl found a position at the municipal sewage system as a secretary and became a bookkeeper for 25 years.
