Emil was baptized on 4 Apr 1849 in the parish church at Filehne and confirmed on 4 Oct 1863 at the same place. He attended school at Ostrowo near Filehne from Easter 1856 to Easter 1863. He received a certif icate as a pharmacist's apprentice and entered the service of Heck, the owner of the pharmacy at Filehne.

Because of bad hearing, Emil lef t the pharmacy prof ession to become a watch maker. He apprenticed from No vember 1863 to May 1868 u nder Emil Riedel, the watchmaker at Kustrin, German y. Emil was 14 when he started his apprenticeship and 19 w hen he finished. During that time, of ten dur ing the noon hou r, he played "Grabsch steinspielen11 ( the grabbing stone game) with IILieschen 11 (little Elise the sixth child of Emil Riedel). She was 6 w hen Emil came to the Riedel's house. Nei ther of them realized u ntil later the mutual aff ection that had developed . He was pleased with Lieschen and they liked to talk and play games. Elise became like a prettystar in Emil's future.

At the end of his apprenticeship, Emil began traveling as a journeyman watchmaker. There is no record of the places he visited or his employers. Finally after 8 or so years of wandering and wor king, he had perf ected his skills and had saved some money. He took an apartment in Berlin, Germany, at 8 Konigsgraben and bought the watch and clock business f rom Hermann Hartramph at 42 Alt-Moabit, Berlin for 3723.90 Marks. Emil Kramm was read y for marriage.

At the time of marriage his business was located at 125 Alt-Moabit. Later it was at 121 Alt-Moabit. In 1894 he relo cated the business to 10-B Alt-Moabit.
