Personal History

Basil Anderson "Papa" Brown was born on the island of Nevis, in the parish of St. George. One Christmas break, he went over to the neighboring island of St. Kitts for sports events and met Rosa Constantia Hodge. They were married in 1940 and had four children together. Palmal, Violet, Charles and Prubin. Shortly after their marriage they went off to Curacao and had some years there. They sent two of their sons, Charles and Prubin back to St. Kitts in 1955 to spend several years with one Miss Williams. Basil and Rosa moved back to St. Kitts in 1960.

Basil was a craftsman and used to make knives and grass-cutting tools. He has a reputation in the community as an excellent cook. Some neighbors would come by and ask, "Papa Brown, wha you cook today?"

Basil lost his wife Rosa in 1969. He had two children before meeting Rosa.

Basil was friends with Austin Adolphin, the father of his daughter-in-law by his son Charles.
