James Austin Adolphin was born on February 5, 1918 in Saint Kitt and Nevis, the son of James Adolphin Sr. and Margaret Christopher.

Family and Early Life

James was better known by his middle name, Austin. He was married to Rita (Warner/Caines) and they had 10 children together. His mother passed away when he was only four years old. He wasn't able to attend school until he was older, so he learned to count by watching older men play dominoes. He started working on a cane field at the age of seven. When Austin was about 12 years old, a man named Wilfred Hodge who was living in Santo Domingo at the time came to St. Kitts after being told to go and take care of his maternal half-brother, Austin. With Wilfred's help, Austin started kindergarten at the age of 12. He was so willing to learn that he was was promoted to fifth grade by the time he was 15.

Austin was friends with Basil Brown, the father of his son-in-law by his daughter Maria Brown.

Death

Austin passed away on August 30, 1999 at the age of 81 on his home island of Saint Kitts.
