    Arthur Alva Shaefer, son of Ephriam and Rachel Shaefer, was born on a farm in Guthrie county near Adair, Iowa on November 15, 1881 and departed this life on August 10, 1960 at the Methodist hospital in Des Moines at the age of 78 years 8 months and 26 days. On October 19, 1910 he was united in marriage to Sylvia May Wolf and they made their home on a farm near Adair, Iowa. To this union were born twin daughters, Mrs. Wayne McLuen of Stuart and Mrs. Dwight Ratliff, a daughter Mrs. Glen Stewart of Las Vegas, Nevada and one son, Everett of West Chester, Penn. Mrs. Dwight Ratliff preceded him in death in 1934. In addition to his wife and three children, he is survived by one brother, Elmer Shaefer of Colorado and five grandchildren. He was a member of the Methodist church and served for a number of years as chairman of the Board of Trustees. He also served several years as a member of the Fairview School Board and as president of the Jefferson Mutual Telephone Co. He was an assessor for ten years in Beaver township. He spent his entire life in Guthrie and Adair counties and retied to the town of Stuart after he suffered a stroke three years ago. He was a lover of flowers and trees and prided himself on good livestock. Mr. and Mrs. Shaefer had planned to celebrate their 50 years of married life in October of this year. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Stuart Methodist church with Rev. Laurence Garrett officiating. Music was presented by Robert Lawson and Robin Lawson. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Franklin Groomes, Mrs. Donald Stemm and Mrs. Earl Kading. Casket bearers were Franklin Groomes, Donald Stemm, Earl Kading, Hobart Newton, Ralph Leff and Walter Hawley. Interment was in South Oak Grove cemetery.
