Rachel McMahon Shaefer was born March 13 1843, in Delphi, Indiana, and died at her home in Adair, Iowa, Wednesday, October 13, 1926, at the age of 82 years and 11 months. She was married to Ephraim Shaefer March 15, 1864, near Delphi, Ind. After five years of married life she moved with her husband to Iowa and settled on a farm in Guthrie county,they being among the early settlers of that county. They resided on the farm for a number of years. To this union were born ten children, B. F. Shaefer, of Guthrie Center; N. W. Shaefer, Eskbank, Sask., Canada; W. W. Shaefer, Adair, Iowa; N. J. Shaefer, Des Moines, Iowa; H. S. Shaefer, Des Moines, Iowa; A. A. Shaefer, Stuart, Iowa; E. E. Shaefer, Adair, Iowa, Ms. C. L. Burr, Guthrie Center, Iowa; Sadie Shaefer, Guthrie Center, Iowa; Mrs. E. W. Burris, deceased. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. F. Shaefer, who died at the old home north of Adair, March 11, 1908. Mrs. Shaefer joined the Methodist Episcopal church when a girl of 18 years, and had been a faithful member for 65 years. She was also a charter member of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society in Adair and was a member at the time of her death. Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal church in Adair Monday afternoon, October 18, conducted by the pastor, Rev. M. J. Rarick. Interment in Sunny Hill cemetery.
