He was the son of Ada Jane Cox, formerly Singleton, and her husband John Henry Cox, a gardener on the Luton Hoo estate. Arthur Edward was the second of the couple's three children, and he was generally known as Eddie. By the time of the 1911 census the family was living at 56 West Hyde, another cottage belonging to the Luton Hoo estate.

In 1928 Eddie married Dorothy May Woodcraft, and they had two children. At the outbreak of the Second World War they were living at 15 Clifton Road in Luton, and Eddie was working as a gear tester at Vauxhall Motors.

In 1955 Eddie's father died, and his mother died in 1959. Eddie was one of the beneficiaries of his mother's will. At the time of her death he was living at 15 Clifton Road in Luton. Dorothy's sister Winifred was a neighbour, living at 17 Clifton Road with her husband.

Dorothy died in 1968, aged 63.

Two years later Eddie married again. His second wife was Dorothy's sister Winifred, whose first husband had died in 1964.

Winifred died in 1996, aged 89. Eddie lived to be 96 and died in 2002.
