Childhood
John Robert Cox was born on 8th January 1903 at Barnack in Northamptonshire, son of Ada Jane Cox, formerly Singleton, and her husband John Henry Cox, a gardener. He was the eldest of their three children. The Cox family had lived in Barnack for over a hundred years before John's birth, but would move away shortly afterwards. In 1904 the gardener at Burghley House near Barnack, A.W. Metcalfe, took up a new post as head gardener at Luton Hoo in Bedfordshire. It seems that John's father probably worked for Metcalfe, as he also went to work at Luton Hoo. John and Bethia on their wedding day outside 56 West Hyde. By the time John's brother Arthur Edward was born in October 1905 the family was living on the Luton Hoo estate. They seem to have lived at a couple of cottages on the estate before settling at 56 West Hyde, where they were living by the time of the 1911 census.
Adulthood
John and Bethia in their garden at Neville Road with their grandchildren. On 18th April 1927 John married Bethia Lewis from the neighbouring town of Luton. They married at East Hyde church. By this time John was working as a carpenter. After their marriage they settled in Luton at 29 Neville Road. They had a son in 1928, then a daughter in 1929.
In 1934 the family was struck with diphtheria. Tragically their son died aged only six years old.
Five years later they had another son, shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War. During the war John worked in Luton's factories making munitions, when he lost a finger in an accident.
John and Bethia in their daughter's garden. After the war John and Bethia's daughter married. Her marriage certificate describes John as a store keeper. John and Bethia had two grandchildren. John's father died in 1955, aged 84. After this his mother moved to a different cottage on the Luton Hoo estate. She died six days before what would have been her 88th birthday.
John lived at 29 Neville Road for the rest of his life with Bethia and their son. He died there on 19th October 1977 aged 74. Bethia survived him by five years.
