When Dorothy was still quite small the family moved to the Luton area, where Dorothy appears in the 1911 census living with her parents and siblings at Dunstable Road in Leagrave.

In 1928 Dorothy married Arthur Edward Cox (who was known as Eddie). They had two children together in the 1930s. At the outbreak of the Second World War, Dorothy and Eddie were living at 15 Clifton Road in Luton, and Eddie was working as a gear tester for Vauxhall Motors in the town.

Dorothy died in 1968, aged 63. Eddie survived her by nearly 34 years.
