Arlene E. Metzger, age 81, of Topeka, passed away Sunday at a Topeka hospital. Arlene was born November 22, 1929 in Topeka the daughter of Harold M. Smith and Eva M. Newman Smith. Arlene graduated from Topeka High School and attended Washburn University for 2 years. She married Paul Pete Metzger April 17, 1949 in Topeka. Arlene was an active member of the Seaman Congregational Church where she sang and directed the church choir. Arlene worked for Santa Fe Railroad, Topeka Credit Bureau and later for the Kansas State and Federal Department of Agriculture. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Helena Chapter #210 of Topeka. Arlene was a founder of the National Alliance for Mentally Ill People and Breakthrough House and served with many other mental health organizations. She was also a member of NOTOMA and the North Topeka Historical Society. Arlene enjoyed singing professionally for weddings and funerals. Arlene was preceded in death by a daughter, Ginger Jackson November 18, 2005. Arlene is survived by her husband of over 62 years, Paul Pete Metzger; a son, Daniel Paul Metzger of Topeka; a daughter, Cynthia Arlene Wall (Larry) of Topeka; 3 grandchildren, Becky True (Travis), Crystal Loethen (Joe) and Bill Wall (Amanda) and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at the Seaman Congregational Church. Eastern Star services will be conducted at the church. She will lie in state Wednesday from noon 5:00 p.m. at the Davidson Funeral Home and at the church for visitation from 6:30 8:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Rochester Cemetery.
