Southern Campaigns Transcription Archibald Houston Pension Application

Overview

According to Archibalds pension application of 1833, he was born in York County PA in 1751, and moved to Rowan County NC with his unidentified father in 1760. During the revolution he served as a volunteer in several campaigns, including the 1777 Cherokee Expedition under Rutherford, and the 1780 Battle of Ramsour's Mill. After the Revolution he continued to live in Rowan County NC, but about 1785 moved to Kentucky, and later to Middle Tennessee, finally relocating about 1825, and finally settled in McNairy County, TN.

In 1843 his widow, Rosanna Houston, age 82, filed for a widows pension, stating that her husband Archibald had died March 18, 1836. She told the court that they had been married October 6 (?) 1784. The Will Graves transcription of the Archibalds pension, adds the footnote that

"p. 5: Marriage bond issued in Rowan County North Carolina October 6 [?], 1784 to Archibald Houston & Andrew Snoddy to secure the marriage of Archibald Houston to Rosanna Cunningham."

The Archibald who acted as security with Andrew Snoddy is presumably a kinsman of this Archibald, and could reasonably be thought as his father.
