Durgee of Osceola has sold 165 acres of land in Orwell to Fred D. Corey, representing the interests developing the Salmon River power. Rome Daily Sentinel, 25 June 1914: ROMAN MEETS LOSS IN OSCEOLA FIRE / / DURGEE HOTEL BARN BURNS // Osceola, June 25-- The barn of the Durgee Hotel in this place was destroyed by fire about 4 o'clock this morning, including all the wagons, harnesses and some other articles owned by Mrs. James Durgee, who runs the hotel. The wagon and stock of Eli Goldman of Rome was also destroyed. His horse and Mrs. Durgee's horse were saved by Charles Alone. Mr. Goldman's loss is about $2,500, partly insured, and Mrs. Durgee's is about $900. The cause of the fire is a mystery and incendiarism is suspected... Utica Herald-Dispatch, 25 June 1914: FIRE AT OSCEOLA Rome, June 25-The barn at the Durgee Hotel, Osceola, Lewis County, was burned early this morning. Incendiarism is suspected. The loss of barn and contents entails a loss to the hotel proprietor of about $1,000. VAN DE WALKER Osceola-- Mrs. Etta H. Van De Walker, 86, died at her home here Tuesday night after an illness of three months. She was born at Orwell May 27, 1859, youngest of seven children of Alonzo and Mary Jewell Hilton. In 1875 she was married to Charles Hall of Orwell. After his death [!] she was married in 1896 to James Durgee. After his death in 1905 she was married to George Van De Walker and for a number of years they operated the local hotel. Mr. Van De Walker died in 1929. She was a member of Orwell Methodist church and attended the Osceola Congregational church. Surviving are five children, Clarence Hall, Redfield; Donald Hall, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada; Reo Hall, Osceola; Harold Durgee, Ilion, and Clyde Durgee, Washington D.C.; 13 grandchildren... A sister-in-law, Mrs. Wilma Hall, local postmistress, has been caring for Mrs. Van De Walker. Funeral services will be held at her late home on Friday... the Rev.
