This is the fourth of July, 2002. (Cheryl Fain) I asked Dad (Alfred Fain) if they celebrated the 4th of July when he was a child. He said they did. They had small firecrackers they would set off. He said they had a few of the large ones. They would play games like: annie over, marbles, tops, and jacks. The girls mostly played the jacks, but the boys would sometimes join in. he described the game of annie over. Several people would be on each side of the house. One team would throw the ball over. If the team on the other side caught the ball, one person from the throwing side would run around the house and they would try to hit that person with the ball. He further talked about the marble game called railroad tracks. They would have a mound of dirt. Dig a track in the side of the hill with some pits along the way. They would shoot the marbles along the track. Inside the pits was the safety zone.

At lunch during bridge the other day, Dad (Alfred Philip Fain) told us several war stories from his youth. They all related to the canal that was next to their home at the time.

In one story, Grandma (Spicie Newton Fain) was coming after him to give him a switchin', and he used the canal as his safe haven. Grandma was deathly afraid of water, and would not come after him. She told him to come back off the levee, but he said he'd run away to the Indians. Unfortunately, there were some Indians riding horses nearby, and they had a good time laughing at the whole incident.

Another time, Grandpa (Phillip Baxter Fain) had a German shepherd that he had assigned to taking care of Thelma (Thelma Betty Fain Craig Caylor). He would growl at anyone who threatened her, or even came close when he was watching. One time she fell into the canal, and that dog jumped in and retrieved her to the side, saving her life. That dog was treated just like family after that.

Dad said he learned how to swim in that canal when he was 3 years old. It was the perfect place to swim. It had a dike that could be opened or closed to control water flow. When it was closed it created the perfect pool. It was some 6 to 8 feet deep when it was full.

The water depth created a tragedy for some Indians one time. They had gotten high drinking sterno, and were riding a team of mules pulling the wagon they were riding in. The team ran off into the canal. Grandpa was able to save the Indians, but not the mules, who drowned being tied to the harnesses of the wagon.

Grandpa would trade dead cows for tortillas. The Indians would take the meat and make jerky out of it, once they had added salt to it.

The Indians used to trap wild horses in a canyon, and they learned that if they put a noose around the "lead" horse and led it out of the canyon, the rest would follow. They would cut out the ones they did not want, and leave them wild. Grandpa would take 3 or 4 out for his own, and usually he had the Indians break them. The Indians were great riders.

Dad and his brothers used to play a marble game called "railroad tracks." The would take a spoon (or similar implement) and create a channel in a hill. Every foot or so they would create a repression. If they could shoot one of their marbles into the channel and it landed in one of these depressions, that marble was safe. It's not entirely clear to me how the game worked, but they played it a lot. Dad says he was pretty good at marbles, and always had a flour bag full of them. He'd trade them for sandwiches (usually peanut butter and jelly) at school.

Philip Steven Fain, 5 July 2002

Military service: Alfred flew airplanes stateside and taught others to fly until involved in a particularly bad accident which left him with back pain and emotional distress. Then he was honorably discharged. Keep in mind that many of these airplanes were still in experimental phases or being used for purposes for which they were not designed so accidents were common. He used his veteran status to help him to get a college education and which gave him an advantage in being hired by government agencies which led to a life of travel and adventure. -- Shawna Gambol Woodard, granddaughter of A. P. Fain.

Information from the Mesa Historical Museum: The Hohokam built canals circa 1100 A. D. They were abandoned by 1450 A. D. Later, Mormon setters used these canals again to irrigate Mesa. The Pima, Maricopa, and Yavapai are the current Native Americans in the Mesa area.
