Alameda Times-Star, Alameda, California 18 May 2004 Joel Fain. A near lifetime resident of Hayward, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, May 15, 2004, at the age of 76. Preceded in death by his loving wife, Dona, and son-in-law, Garyl Francis. Joel was a devoted father of Jerry and Brenda Fain of Castro Valley, Cliff and Janeen Fain of Las Vegas, NV, Ruth and Stan Enos of Hayward, Karen Krengle of Lakewood, CO, Kathy and Fred Matzdorf of Steamboat Springs, CO, and Janice and Herb Blackinton of Des Moines, WA. Pop was also the supportive grandfather of Jason, Anastasia, Justin, Clara and Aaron Francis, Eric and Audra Krengel, Nicole and Erica Fain, Joshua, Jessie and Wyatt Fain, Joel Matzdorf, and great-grandfather of Leticia and Anthony Francis. Joel is also survived by companion Zoe Foster of San Ramon. A 1946 graduate of Hayward High School, he remained an active community member, serving as coach and president of Tennyson Little League, president of the Hayward Boy Scouts, and a longtime member of the Hayward Lions Club. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed following Bay Area sports teams. He looked forward to playing bridge with his Saturday H.A.R.D. Senior Bridge Club. Joel will be missed by the many friends whose lives he touched. In lieu of flowers, family prefers donations to the Sorendale Special Olympic Program, 1099 E. St., Hayward, CA 94541. A celebration of his life will be held Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at 10:00 a.m. at Sorensen Bros. Mortuary (510) 581-1234.
