from Shawna Gambol Woodard, niece of P. Steve Fain, reflections on Uncle Steve 1) Uncle Dandelion was so named for his blond afro from the 1970's. He looked like a dandelion (or chia Bob Ross).----2) Member of the Drum and Bugle Corps - see picture and wanted add for trumpet.-----3) Cat whisperer. Steve loved cats and dogs. In particular, he could get the most ornery, arthritis-ridden cat play like a kitten again. He had cat play technique down to a science.-----4) Runner. He ran every day that he could and even on days when he pretty much could not. ----5) Beer and wine traveller - tasted the nectars of Germany and France in his travels ----6) Long time bachelor then unexpectedly to his family and friends a husband and father (possible connection to love of and number of cats in his home)---7) Softball player (and inspiration to me as a child softball player) ---8) Wickedly sharp card player (bridge, canasta, pinochle, 500, etc.) ---9) practical joker and great laugh-er, he was a fan of the 3 Stooges https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Three_Stooges and his mother called him Steverino because of comedian Steve Allen https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Steve_Allen_Show , sometimes wore Groucho Marx glasses and mustache ---10) soccer and Seattle Mariners fan. We went to a Mens Indoor Soccer League game and a Mariners game in summer 1982---11) loved Riverdance (the cadence of their feet) and Tetris on the Gameboy with its mesmerizing patterns---12)computer guy before computers were a thing (hence the physics major)---13)musician and music lover, played bugle and trumpet and cornet---13)poet - wrote free verse (his father, mother, uncle (Allen), sister, and niece (Lee) all wrote poetry as well) his poetry and his father's poetry tended to be more serious/thoughtful, the ladies' poetry was more humorous/whimsical----14) Was awarded an Air Force service medal for keeping up morale by organizing table tennis tournaments in Korea---15)Made Christmas samplers of music for all his friends and relatives, first with mix tapes then with compact disks of music from his reel to reel, record, cassettes, disks, online music, etc.---16)Had an entire room full of reel to reel music, eventually replaced with compact disks of music, mostly jazz, but all genres, especially music with great beats

High Flight by John Gillespie Magee
Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun-split clouds, – and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there, I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air… Up, up the long, delirious burning blue I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or ever eagle flew – And, while with silent, lifting mind I’ve trod The high untrespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

https://obituaries.seattletimes.com/obituary/phillip-fain-1080814256 Phillip Steven Fain (Steve) October 27, 1949 - November 10, 2020 Steve Fain. Anyone that knew him, knew they'd never meet anyone like him. Philip Steven Fain of Seattle died unexpectedly at home on November 10. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Maureen "Mo" (Corrigan) Fain, daughters Audra and Camille, and sister, Cheryl. He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Betty (Brightwell) Fain. Steve grew up all over the world, living in California, Hawaii, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico before making Washington his home. He returned to the University of Washington a few years after graduating with a degree in Physics to play the mellophone in the marching band one final year. Steve was awarded his Master's in School Administration from Western Washington University and taught at Meany Middle School before spending 45 years working for Boeing. Steve is known and beloved throughout the Beacon Hill, where he has lived since 1976. For the last 40 years, he jogged his five-mile route through the neighborhood and made many friends along the way. Steve was an Air Force veteran who served in Korea in the 1970's and was awarded for improving morale among the servicemen. He was warm and welcoming to everyone, human or animal, and could tell them where to hear fine local music and get quality wine or beer. He was playful and competitive whether spurring himself and others on to run farther, perform better in softball, win at playing cards, or conspire with him to execute a joke. To know Steve was to know that he loved his daily routine. He ran with many generations of family dogs, wrote in his journal, and sent daily letters to his mom, daughters and cousins. Up until her passing, he called his mom in Ohio every day at 4:25pm to make sure she was awake to watch Jeopardy. Recently, his routine grew to include picking flowers from unsuspecting neighbor's yards, which he would arrange into bouquets for Mo. No routine was more famous than Steve's annual Digital Christmas Sampler. Every year since 1989, Steve would hand-select a mix of Christmas songs for family and friends - and deliver them throughout Seattle. He would decide the theme a year in advance - bluegrass, pop, a cappella - and spend his morning jogs listening to hundreds of hours of Christmas music. He started in June just to finish "production" - as he called it - by December. Steve was a poet, storyteller, ruthless card player, trekkie, drum and bugle corps aficionado, and animal lover. He loved his pets Scotty, Henry, and Reilly. Steve was a board member of the non-profit Guatemala Village Health. The family asks that in lieu of flowers donations be made at gvhealth.org.
