  27. "Alex W. Krumm - A worth representative of the dignity of the law, and acitizen of the highest character, Alex W. Krumm, deceased, was numberedamong the able attorneys of Franklin County. He was born in Columbus,March 12 1850, the son of Martin and Fredericka (Fichtner) Krumm. BothMartin Krumm and his wife were natives of Wortemburg Germany, born in1812 and 1820 respectively. They came to the United States in 1832 andwere among the first settlers of Columbus, where Mr. Krumm was employedas a machinist. Later he became a manufacturer of iron. Both he andhis wife are buried in Columbus.
    Alex W. Krumm spent his entire life in the city of Columbus. He waseducated in the public schools and studied law in the offices of Englishand Baldwin, who were leading attorneys of Franklin County at that time.Mr. Krumm was admitted to the Ohio State Bar in 1875 and for a time wasassociated in practice with the late John H. Heitman, at one time mayorof Columbus. He became city solicitor in 1879 and served in thatcapacity until 1883. From that date until his death, December 19, 1910,Mr. Krumm engaged in private practice.
    In 1877 Mr. Krumm married Miss Mary M. Zettler, the daughter of JohnZettler, a leading pioneer citizen of Columbus and a member of one ofthe oldest families of Franklin County. Their children were Herbert,Benjamin, Thomas, Grace Hellen, Nettie belle, John J., Alex W., Samuel,James, and Edna Mary. Alex W. Krumm, Jr., is cashier of the OhioNational Bank in Columbus. The widow of Alex W. Krumm resides inColumbus."

  29. Alexander wrote the following on the pages in his scrapbook: "To Lex etal("the boys")
    Matters which are considered by a prospective employer, when employingclerks, etc. and likewise in the matter of advancing them.
    1. Can he read and speak good English?
    2. Can he read and speak German?
    3. Has he had a high school education?
    4. Are his personal habits and associations good and clean?
    5. Is he attentive, obliging and polite?
    6. Is he prompt, faithful and zealous in his work?
    7. Will (or does) he try to learn his work and look to the interest ofhis employer?
    8. Does he use his leisure how to the best, or at least to good avail?
    He should never think he "knows it all" especially so after only briefemployment, etc., etc. We hear many employees speak slightly of the to?(illegible) and like matters but they deceive only themselves Does hesmoke, drink, chew, gamble, etc.?" Alexander also had pasted upon thispage three articles written about acceptable work behavior. In aninterview with Julie Krumm Reeder we were told that Alexander wastotally against his children becoming lawyers as he felt it was not an"honorable" profession and thus handed down is clientele to his brotherAlbert and Albert's son Charles.
  30. ALEXANDER W. KRUMM
    "One of the well-known professional men of the city of Columbus,Ohio is one of her native sons, Alexander W. Krumm, whose birth occurredhere March 12, 1850. His father was Martin Krumm, a native ofWurtemberg, Germany, born their in 1812, emigrating to this country in1832 and dying in Columbus after a long a successful career as amachinist and iron manufacturer. He had come to America with his fatherand his family. The mother of our subject is still living. Her maidenname was Frederika Fichtner, and she also was born in Wurtemberg,Gemany, in 1820, and although she reached her eighty-first year, isactive in mind and body. Six of her ten children still survive:Martin; Albert; Alexander W.; Daniel; Flora, the wife of Dr. A. M.Bleile, of the State University; and Louisa A., three having died ininfancy, and the eldest, Frederick Krumm, having died in July 1899.
    Mr. Krumm, of this review, received his education in the cityschools of Columbus, soon afterward entering upon the study of law underthe guidance of Messrs. English & Baldwin, two prominent attorneys,constituting one of the leading law firms of this city. He was admittedto the bar in 1875, immediately commencing his practice in partnershipwith John H. Heitmann, then mayor of the city, and with whom he remainedeighteen months. His legal business steadily grew and his friendsproclaimed their confidence in his ability by electing him to the officeof city solicitor from 1879 to 1883, - two terms.
    The marriage of Mr. Krumm took place in 1877, to Miss Mary M.Zettler, of Columbus, a daughter of John Zettler, an old and highlyrespected citizen. Ten Children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Krumm;Herbert, a cadet at West Point; Benjamin; Thomas; Grace Helen; NettieBelle; John J., who died in 1887; Alexander W. Jr.; Samuel; James; andEdna Mary.
    Mr. Krumm has never taken a great interest in politics, the demandsof his constantly growing practice having required his undividedattention. He owns and occupies a beautiful residence at No. 975 SouthHigh street, where his attractive surroundings proclaim his materialprosperity and aesthetic taste."

  34. "A.W. KRUMM DIES AT THE AGE OF 61- Well-known Attorney and Former CitySolicitor Passes Away from Meningitis.- Active Resident of South Sideand Member of German Musical Societies.- Alexander W. Krumm, aged 61,attorney and former City solicitor, a member of one of the better knownfamilies of Columbus, died last evening at his home, 975 South highStreet, from meningitis. Death occurred unexpectedly, although Mr.Krumm had been in poor health for six months, due to a general breakingdown. For 30 years Mr. Krumm had law offices at 269 1/2 South HighStreet. He was a member of the firm, Krumm and Krumm. For 13 years hisnephew, C. S. M. Krumm, was his partner and previous to that C. S. M.Krumm's father, the late Albert Krumm, was his associate. Mr. Krummread law in the office of English and Baldwin. A student with him wasGeorge S. Peters, now a member of the firm, Booth, Keating, Peters andPomerene. Mr. Peters, who served as mayor, seeded Mr. Krumm as Citysolicitor_ the first election of Mr. Krumm occurred in 1881 and when heappeared as candidate for reelection, the Democratic Party endorsed himand nominated no candidate for solicitor. The dead lawyer was adirector of the Ohio National Bank from the time of its organization.He took an active interest in public affairs, particularly thoseaffecting the South Side. For years he was prominently connected withthe South Side Business and Improvement Association. German musicalorganizations also claimed a generous share of his time.the atdifferent. He was a member of the Liederkranz, the Maennerchor and theArion Club. Mr. Krumm was a son of the late Martin Krumm, who wasengaged in the iron fence business and was born and reared in Columbus.His widow, who survives, was Mrs. Mary M. Zettler, whose family hasbeen prominent in the city for many years. There are seven children,Messrs. Benjamin Z., Thomas Z., Alex W., Jr., Samuel Z. and James Z.Krumm, Misses Nettie and Edna Krumm. The middle initial Z. and thenames of four sons stands for Zettler_ there are two brothers surviving,Martin and Daniel Krumm and two sisters, Mrs. A. M. Bleile and Mrs.Albert Armbruster. Pending word from Thomas Z. Crown, a civil engineer,engaged in row roadwork in North Dakota, arrangements for the funeralhave not been made."

    HAD BEEN ILL FOR A YEAR: Is Survived by His Widow, Seven Children andOther Relatives - Alexander W. Krumm, a well-known attorney with officesat 269 1-2 South High street, died suddenly at his home, 975 South Highstreet, Monday night, of meningitis. Although Mr. Krumm had been inimpaired health for nearly a year his death was wholly unexpected untilwithin the last two or three days.
    A WELL-KNOWN LAWYER
    He was one of the best-known of the older lawyers of Columbus and hisoffice had been at 269 1-2 South High street for over 20 years. He wasa son of the late Martin Krumm, pioneer manufacturer here of ironfencing. His brother, the late Albert Krumm, was his law partner atfirst, and after his death, his nephew, C.S. M. Krumm, was associatedwith him.
    Mr. Krumm studied law in the office of English & Baldwin and George S.Peters was a student with him. Soon after his admission to the bar Mr.Krumm was elected city solicitor. Mr. Peters, who was afterward electedmayor, succeeded him in the office of solicitor. His first election ofsolicitor was in 1881 and when he was a candidate for re-election theDemocrats nominated no opponent.
    SEVEN CHILDREN SURVIVE
    He is survived by his widow, who was Miss Mary Zettler, and these sevenchildren: Benjamin Z., Thomas Z., Alex W. jr, Samuel Z., James Z., andMiss Nettie and Miss Edna Krumm. Thomas Z. Krumm is an engineer locatedin South Dakota. The others live here. Two brothers, Martin and DanielKrumm, and two sisters, Mrs. A. M. Bleile and Mrs. Albert Armbruster,survive him.
    Mr. Krumm was active in the South Side Business Men's club, in theGerman singing societies and was from the beginning a director of theOhio National bank."
  36. This letter was given to Alexander's wife after his death: "AlexanderWashington Krumm departed this life Monday, December 19, 1910, aged 61years. He was born and lived all his life in Columbus. He attended thepublic schools and graduated from Central high school at the age of 18years. His parents were not wealthy, and he entered life's struggle asa clerk in a dry goods store for the period of two years. His naturaltastes were for the law. He entered the law office of English andBaldwin as a student, and was admitted to the bar at the age of 23years. He was elected City Solicitor in the spring of 1879 on theRepublican ticket and was re-elected in 1881 without opposition,certainly a high compliment, which spoke volumes of his high character,popularity and efficiency as a public official. Mr. Krumm was notpartisan in politics and preferred to be classed as an independent.After his second term as City Solicitor, he entered vigorously into thepractice of the law and achieved success. He was married in 1875 toMrs. Mary M. Zettler, who with seven children survived him. Mr. Krummwas a man of umbel unleashed character; possessing those loftysentiments that make up the highest qualities of the best citizen. Hemanifested a deep interest in the general improvement stand up buildingof Columbus. He was a charter member of the South Side Business andImprovement Association, serving for some four years as an officer ordirector therein. It was in this capacity that his lofty character,Sterling qualities and good judgment were exhibited. It was in thiscapacity that he ingratiating himself into the hearts of the members ofhis fellow workers in this association. He was buying nature a musicianand a lover of music, identifying himself with the noted and prominentsinging societies of Columbus. Mr. Krumm was not hasty in theexpression of his convictions. He generally possess decided opinions onall leading local and public questions; these convictions he did nothesitate to express, always willing to reason with those possessingcontrary opinions. He was a lover of nature, enjoying the fresh mayorand sunshine as major smile on him. His sympathy for the poor, thenewsboys and others that required aid was intense; many, many times tokeep thrust his hand into his pockets, draw for a claim and handed tosome needy person. Alexander W. Krumm is dead. His character, socialqualities and genial temperament still live and will lead of so long ashis legion of friends remained on her. In the death of Alexander W.Krumm, his family mourned a kind husband and father; the city ofColumbus has lost an honored citizen, and this association of patrioticand useful member. THEREFORE, the edge resolved by the South SideBusiness and Improvement Association that this Memorial and resolutionbe adopted and spread on the minutes, and that a copy be transmitted tothe family of the deceased."- (and then signed by the Secretary and thepresident)

    "Alexander Washington Krumm died in Columbus, Ohio, December 19,1910. He was the fifth child of Martin and Frederica (Fichtner) Krumm,and was born March 12, 1850, on the S.W. corner of Sixth and StateStreets. When three years old his parents removed to the east side ofFourth Street near the alley between Friend (Main) and Mound Streets,where his father established a machine shop and later began themanufacture of iron fencing, a business still flourishing under themanagement of the younger brother Martin. Here his boyhood and youthwere spent attending schools and working between times in the shop withhis father and brothers. He graduated from the Columbus High School in1868, and for a time, while deciding on his future career, he clerkedfor his oldest brother Fred in his dry goods store on Fourth Street. Atthe age of twenty years he entered the law office of English & Baldwin,as a law student and after three years of hard study was admitted to theBar in 1873. He soon formed a partnership with J.H. Heitman, afterwardsMayor. In the spring of 1879 he was elected City Solicitor by acombination of Republicans and Greenbackers, and so well did he performthe duties of that office and so popular did he become that in 1881 hewas re-elected on the Republican ticket without opposition.
    At the close of his second term he declined to be a candidate againand resumed the practice of law and soon built up a large and lucrativebusiness which continued until within a few years past when ill healthcompelled his gradual withdrawal from active practice. As a lawyer hewas noted for accuracy and painstaking care in drawing papers for closeattention to the details of practice. He was one of the very fewlawyers in Columbus who could draw legal papers with equal accuracy andfacility in both German and English.
    Mr. Krumm was married in 1875 to Miss Mary M. Zettler, and was thefather of ten children of whom seven, together with their mother survivehim. He was a man of high character, public spirited and deeplyinterested in the upbuilding and improving of Columbus."
