Albert Edwards was baptised on 8th September 1872 at Sidlesham in Sussex, son of a dressmaker named Fanny Edwards, formerly Grant, and her husband William Edwards, a traction engine driver. Albert was the eldest of William and Fanny's ten children. When Albert was born both his grandmothers were alive and living locally.
Some time between 1875 and 1877 the family left Sidlesham and moved to the neighbouring parish of Pagham. Back in Sidlesham, Albert's maternal grandmother died in 1879. The 1881 census finds Albert and his parents and siblings living in Pagham.
Family group, possibly for Albert's sister Theresa's marriage in 1908. Albert is thought to be the man in bowler hat. By 1891 Albert had left home and was living in the nearby town of Bognor and working as a labourer on the railways. By 1895 he had progressed to become a railway fireman. On 27th June 1895, Albert married Harriet Banfield, who was originally from West Grinstead, but who had moved to Bognor to work as a housemaid. They married at Pagham, where Albert's parents were still living, although shortly afterwards Albert's parents moved to nearby Runcton, whilst Albert and Harriet initially lived in Bognor after their marriage.
Between 1896 and 1902 Albert and Harriet had four sons together. The elder three boys were born at Bognor. They then moved to Littlehampton, where they appear in the 1901 census living at 15 Gloucester Road.
By 1911 the family had moved inland to Horsham, and Albert had become a railway engine driver. All four of their sons worked for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway at some point. It is thought their son Harold also served in the army in the First World War.
Harriet died in 1923, aged 56. She and Albert had been married for 28 years.
The following year Albert married again. His second wife was Sarah Ann Rudwick, formerly Peck, whose first husband had died in 1921. Sarah had one adult son surviving from her first marriage. In 1925 Albert's mother Fanny died at Runcton. After her death Albert's father William moved to Littlehampton where he lived with Albert's sister Louise. He died in Littlehampton in 1933.
Albert and Sarah were married for eleven years. They lived at 33 Maxwell Road in Littlehampton. Albert died in hospital in Chichester on 4th December 1935, aged 63. Sarah survived him by over 24 years.
