Harriet Banfield was baptised on 29th September 1867 at West Grinstead in Sussex, daughter of Maria Banfield, formerly Tullett, and her husband William Banfield, a labourer. Harriet appears in the 1871 census living with her parents and siblings at Partridge Green in the parish of West Grinstead. By 1881 Harriet had left home and was working as a nurse for a builders' merchant and his family in Worthing. Harriet continued to work in domestic service, appearing in the 1891 census working for a doctor and his family in Bognor.

On 27th June 1895, aged 28, Harriet was married at Pagham, near Bognor, to a railway fireman named Albert Edwards. He was about five years younger than her. Between 1896 and 1902 they had four sons together. The elder three boys were born at Bognor. They then moved to Littlehampton, where they appear in the 1901 census living at 15 Gloucester Road.

By 1911 the family had moved inland to Horsham, and Albert had become a railway engine driver. All four of Harriet's sons worked for the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway at some point.

Harriet died in 1923, aged 56. Albert survived her by about twelve years and remarried the year after her death.
