In the 1860 Census, Adam lived next door to his brother Peter.
Adam was 26 years old and married to Fanny, age 18, who was born in Indiana. It appears Adams home was worth 300.00 and he had 100.00 in personal asssets. Adam worked as a day labourer.

"White Creek" would question a connection to Switzerland for Adam. All the Hipskinds of Wabash County, Indiana seem to have migrated from the Palatinate. It would have been very unusual for a Palatine to go UP the Rhine River, when the migration pattern was the opposite.

This book is a biography of the founder of the city of Wabash, Hugh Hanna. On page 311 of the book, the author mentions that in 1894 the "Wabash County Directory" listed twenty-one heads of households named HIPSKIND. No doubt ADAM was one of them.

The research of Alan and Tessa Davis shows only this one occupation for Adam. The 1976 "Wabash County History" also shows him as a shoemaker, but often men in his day would have had a variety of occupations.

This census enumeration shows Adam on the next line below "Elizabeth GIBLE", who was actually the widow Elizabeth (Glasser) Geibel, living in the household of her daughter Elizabeth HILDENBRAND (see WeRelate pages for them).
