Peter, and his brother Adam, both single, came to the United States in 1852. Peter was shoemaker and Adam was a weaver. For lack of work in their chosen profession, they soon became laborers. They helped build a grade of the Wabash Railroad.

1860 Census Peter Hipskind, age 32, living with to Philipine Hipskind, age 19, who was born in Ohio, with one child - Peter, age 3, born in Indiana. Peter did not own his home, and is listed as a day labourer

1880 Census shows Peter Hipskind, age 51, married to Elizabeth, age 37, born in Baden. The following listed children were all born in Indiana: Peter age 21 and a grocer clerk (?) , Frederick 17, (driving?) Mary (?) age 15 (at home); Caroline 13 (at school); Michael 11 (at school); Anna ? 9 (at school)

PETER was one of the founders of St. Matthew's Church, in Wabash. Many of the founders were former Palatines, who had migrated to Tuscarawas County, Ohio, beginning in circa 1834, and after circa 1848 migrated to the Urbana, Indiana area. The St. Peter's Church at Urbana was the parent church of St. Matthew's. There were three other German Reformed sister congregations across the county line, in Huntington County.
