Overview

Often Confused With:

Abraham Walker of Clarke County, Alabama. (Unrelated. Also had a wife named Martha. Different YDNA Group 37. Also born in Chester, South Carolina but never lived in Tennessee)
Abraham Walker (Abraham S. Walker. Unrelated. From Kentucky. Also married in Davidson County, Tennessee. Died in Macoupin County, Illinois)

Abraham Walker is often confused with two other, unrelated Abraham Walkers. He is most commonly confused with Abraham Walker of Clarke County, Alabama. However, records indicate that the Abraham Walker of this page never lived in Alabama. He lived his life in Williamson and Davidson Counties of Tennessee. He later moved to Fayette County, Tennessee with some of his children and remarried. He married Martha Patton in Davidson County, Tennessee in 1798 and subsequently moved to Williamson County where he had multiple land grants on Murphee's Fork of West Harpeth River[1][2][3][4]. Tax records[5] indicate he had moved to the region as early as 1805. The 1820 census in Williamson County[6] suggests that he had 10 children. His wife Martha had passed by this year as well. In the late 1820's he sold his land to his son in law Benjamin Love[7] and was in Davidson County in the 1830 census[8]. By 1840 hewas in Fayette County, Tennessee not too far away from some of his children[9]. By this point he had also married his second wife, Jane Birdwell[10]. He died by 1850[11]; unfortunately, his probate record was likely lost in a 1925 fire in the county courthouse.[12]. Caution must thus be taken to identify Abraham's children. These are the list of likely children based on surviving records and genetic evidence:

First born son, likely named John Walker. This is not the John Walker of Williamsport, Tennessee as recent YDNA evidence he is the grandson of the related James Walker
Ann Walker.
Born 1800. Married Abraham's neighbor William Patton in 1820[13]
Rebecca Jane Walker.
Born 1801. Married Abraham's neighbor Benjamin Love in 1825. Later moved to Fayette County, Tennessee.[14]
Mary Walker.
Born after 1804. Married Abraham's neighbor William Patterson in 1828. Later moved to Davidson County, Tennessee.[15]
Martha Patton Walker.
Born 1806. Married William Dodson in 1828. Later moved to Fayette County, Tennessee.[16]
William Brown Walker.
Born 1811. Direct neighbor to son in law Benjamin Love in Fayette County, Tennessee.[17]

Note that many of the names and birthdates of the children are consistent with the 1820 census as well as traditional Scottish naming conventions. John is named after Abraham's father John Walker. Ann Walker after his mother Ann Barnett. Rebecca Jane Walker is named after Martha Patton's mother Rebecca Barnett. Martha Patton Walker is clearly named after the mother.
