Overview
There were three Porter families who settled in Old Augusta during the Pre-Revolutionary period.
- Samuel Porter who came to the area from Drumore Township, in PA, settled south of the Buffalo, and eventually returned to Lancaster County, PA.. According to Samuel's will which was probated in 1775 in Lancaster County,PA., Pennsylvania, Wills and Probate Records, 1683-1993, Samuel named 5 heirs: 1 son- Jacob Porter (married Jennet/Jane Herron daughter of David Herron and Elizabeth Redddick of Cumberland/Franklin County, PA.) and 1 daughter - Elizabeth Porter (married Robert Culbertson of Lancaster County, PA, Guilford NC and Laurens, SC..son of Andrew Culbertson and Elizabeth Arbuckle), and 3 brothers: Alexander Porter, Joseph Porter and Patrick Porter. Samuel's relationship in his will to Patrick Porter which includes the mention of bonds owed to him by Patrick is corroberated by entries pertaining to both of them in Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia.
- Person:Patrick Porter (1) who settled south of the Buffalo. Patrick Porter's relationship to Samuel Porter of Drumore Township, Lancaster County, PA and of Buffalo Creek, Augusta County, Virginia is confirmed in the details of Samuel Porter's will, Pennsylvania, Wills and Probate Records, 1683-1993, and corroberating entries in Lyman Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, both sets of records mention bonds owed by Patrick Porter.
- Person:William Porter (70) William Porter who settled on the southside of the Maury River, approximately where the River passes between Jump Mountain to the North, and Hogback Mountain to the South (e.g., immediately downstream of Goshen Pass)
