Virginia-At a Court of Quarterly sessions held in Scott Co. the 13th day of August 1839.

This Indenture of bargain and saled for land from John Willis and others, Jesse Rogers was granted in Court by the Oaths of James Bellamy, John Rogers and Bradley Bellamy, subscribing witnesses and is ordered to be recorded.

Atteste John Martin S.S.C.

[From the above, Teressa notes] We have Jacob Willis decd, the father of John Willis, Sally Willis Crow, Nancy Willis Taylor, Daniel Willis Elizabeth Willis Davison. Five children giving 5/6th interest to Jesse Rogers with no money mentioned. I'm guessing the other 1/6th is already his through a deceased wife? Rogers probably has children so the 1/6th interest would be passed to the grandchildren. No wife mentioned. Year 1839.

Map of General location of Jacob Willis' property.
image:Big Mocassin Gap Poor Valley.jpg
The foregoing property description places Jacob Willis' in Scott County, between Clinch Mountain and Pine Ridge in Poor Valley. Poor Valley runs from Saltville well to the north of this area, south into Tennessee. The modern feature known as "Pine Ridge" is presumably the feature in the property description described as "a Pine Ridge". To place this in context with the family of Abner Willis and Eve Sifers, some of Eve's kin moved southwestward during the early 1800's from Locust Cove NE of Saltville, to Brumley's Gap, a few miles northeast of Jacob Willis' property. Abner and Eve settled just north of Brumley's Gap near modern Nickelsville. One of their sons settled just north of Gate City and Big Moccassin Gap shown on the left of this map. Also shown on this map is the modern community of "Snowflake". Houston's Fort, which figures in the history of the Walker -Kilgore line, lies in this area. This fort was founded by William Houston, a relation of Ann Houston, wife of John Walker III of the Wigton Walker line. Rebecca Kilgore, a descendant of Ann married James Willis, grandson of Abner Willis.)

Michael Gash

Michael Gash apparently assigned a treasury Warrnat issued 1783 to Abner Willis, who had the property surveyed in 1810. From Teressa Hasty, 14 Sept 2009. Teressa notes:

I have poured over many records regarding Michael Gash. What I gleaned from those records was that Gash served in Dunmore's War under Captain Lewis. Fought in the Battle at Point Pleasant and possibly was given land for donating supplies during the Revolution. Owned several parcels of land. See below: From the Campbell Co., VA Deed Book 1, page 214: Jul 2, 1783 from Isham Talbot Jr. of C, to Thomas Vest of C, for 5 shillings and for a promise made by James Talbot, his father, to John Gibson, about 400 acres in C on both sides of buck branch, a branch of Seneca Cr., and bounded by John Webster Gilbert, Benjamin Butterworth, "and others", being the remainder of 1000 acres conveyed to aforesaid James Talbot from Michael Gash, as by the records of Bedford Co. will more fully appear. Signed - Isham Talbot. Wit. John Talbot, Thomas Talbot, Thomas Eidson. Recorded Dec. 4, 1783.
