Marriages solemnized in the Parish of Hinxworth in the County of Hertford in the Year 1835
    No. 49
Thomas Briant of this Parish Bachelor and Martha Street of this Parish Spinster were married in this Church by Banns with Consent of [blank] this nineteenth Day of December in the Year One thousand eight hundred and thirty five By me John Lafont, Rector
This Marriage was solemnized between us {Thomas Bryant / The X mark of Martha Street
In the Presence of {The mark X of John Squires / The mark X of Elizabeth Briant

'Martha' here is presumably the 'Patty' of almost all other records concerning her. The birth certificates of her daughters Betsy and Susan confirm that Patty's maiden name was Street, and this appears to be the only plausible marriage. Perhaps the vicar who performed the marriage felt that 'Patty' must be a diminutive version of some other more formal name. It is not clear who the Elizabeth Briant who witnessed this marriage was. Thomas had two sisters-in-law called Elizabeth Bryant / Briant at this time, being the wives of his brothers Edmund and John. John’s wife’s maiden name was also Street, although no obvious connection to Martha / Patty’s family has been found.
