In the 1880 census there is a G. B. Markle listed in Jackson township, Guthrie County. This could have been a relative of George and Elizabeth Markle. They are listed as G. B. Markle, age 32 born in PA, wife Sarah E., age 28, born in PA, children, Pollie A., age 3 and Charlie B. age 10 months. Pollie being born in NE and Charlie in IA. George Markle was b. May 4, 1813 in Somerset Co. PA and he married Elizabeth Miller in 1836 in OH. They moved to LaCrosse Co. WI where George d. on March 31, 1887 and Elizabeth d. January 21, 190l. They are buried in the Markle cemetery in LaCrosse. They had nine children: Emanuel, b. 1837, Charles Jacob, b. 1839, Simon Peter, b. 1841, Catherine Ann, b. 1843, George Washington, b. 1846, Rachel Jane, b. 1848, John, b. 1851, Naomi b. 1853 and Elnora b. 1853. The last two being twins. The first six children were born in Parke Co. OH and the last two in LaCrosse Co. WI. Simon Peter died in the Battle of the Wilderness of the Civil War. In 1843 they sold the Ohio farm and moved to Putnam Co. IN. Eight years later in 1851 they moved to LaCrosse Co. WI. George was a foreman in a brickyard belonging to Deacon Sylvester Smith. In 1853 they settled on 160 acres of land and stayed until George died. Burial was in Markle Cemetery, Morman Coulee, LaCrosse Co. Wisconsin. |
