Daniel Kilcommons is most likely from the area of Keeloges East, County Galway. Thomas Kilcommons, son of Owen Kilcommons and Ellen Keenahan of Keeloges East was certainly a close relative. He lived with Daniel's daughter Bridget and her husband in 1900, and his obituary mentions a niece, Mrs. Dougherty, of Georgetown (Wilkes-Barre), Pennsylvania. While this would imply that Thomas was Daniel's brother, this cannot be the case, since Thomas had a younger brother named Daniel, and Daniel would be too old to be Owen's son.

He may be the Daniel Kilcommons who was living in the Ezra Osborn household in Middletown, Monmouth County, NJ, at the time of the 1850 Federal Census.N1 If this is the case, he may have married his first wife, Bridget Coyne, in New Jersey.

Daniel was naturalized on 21 October 1857 at the Common Pleas Court, New York City. He was living at 18 Leonard St.N2 This means he immigrated no later than 21 October 1852, since he would have had to have been resident for five years before being eligible for citizenship. According to the 1860 Census Federal Census for New York, he was a laborer residing in the 1st District of the 5th ward of New York City.N3 The fifth ward was on the lower west side, bounded by Canal Street on the north, Broadway on the east, and Reade Street on the south. He was unable to read and write. This presumably means he was unable to read and write English, but perhaps he could read and write Irish. There were 70 families living in this building. In 1870, D. “Kilcumens,” age 40, Sarah, 30, Dan., 12, Joseph, 9, and Mary 1, were living on Leonard Street, 9th District of the 5th ward of New York City. In the same building was the Thomas Higgins family, including Theresa, age 2, whom Joseph would marry.
