Bryant Flanagan married Phoebe Myers Ruth in October 14, 1855 in Hartford, Putnam County, Missouri. When he died at Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee, on the night before the Battle of Shiloh, he left behind three young sons. The oldest was 6 years old, the youngest was 3 months old. Their names reflect an idealism for the new Republican movement in the United States: Liberty, Union and Merritt. Soon after Bryant's death, Phoebe was married to Horace Smith Jewell. In 1866, they joined William Flanagan, Bryant's brother, in a trek to Montana with her three sons. At some point, her eldest son Liberty, returned to Missouri. In 1879 Phoebe and Horace returned to Missouri also. The two younger sons remained in Montana. Phoebe and Horace lived well into the 20th century. She died in 1920, and he in 1921, both in Unionville, Putnam County, Missouri. References
