    O Submarino USS Sand Lance - SS 381, foi o primeiro navio da Marinha dos EUA a ter esse nome em homenagem e esse peixe da família das Ammodytidae e foi construído pelo Portsmouth Navy Yard, em Kittery, Maine. Teve sua quilha batida em 12 de março de 1943, foi lançado ao mar em 25 de junho de 1943, tendo como madrinha a Sra. Edith Burrows, exposa do Capitão-de-Corveta Albert Collins Burrows, então comandante do submarino USS Whale - SS 239. Burrows, e incorporado em Portsmouth, New Hampshire, em 9 de outubro de 1943.
