Test results from the FTDNA Kilgore YDNA Project are found at WorldFamilies. Data extracted May, 2010.

Explanation

A summary of YDNA test results for persons in the Kilgore YDNA Project is presented under "Data". The following terms are useful in interpreting these data.

Kit number Identifying code for each individual test result. The identity of the person corresponding to each kit number is not normally known.
Lineage The lineage of the test subject excluding living individuals, as provided by the test subject. Some lineages are presented more completely than others. Some individuals provide virtually no lineage information. Note that the lineage information that is provided is what the test subject accepts as their ancestry. There is no quarantee that the lineage is correct. One of the objectives of YDNA testing is to help individuals confirm or refute their own lineage information.
HaplogroupSee Wikipedia:Haplogroup for definition. In general, "haplogroups" define large groups of individuals that share a common ancestor relatively deep in their ancestry, perhaps as recently as a few thousand years ago, and perhaps as long as 100,000 years ago or more. "Haplogroups" are not directly useful for identifying genealogical relationships, at least in terms of identifying a specific common ancestor, but they are sometimes useful in determining whether two living individuals share a common ancestor at some point in the recent past. For example, if person "A" belongs to the R1b haplogroup, and person "B" belongs to the "I" haplorgroup, we can be confident that they do not share a relatively recent common ancestor---that is, they shared a common male ancestor to far back in time to be genealogically meaningful.
MarkersThe data table compares results obtained for 37 genetic markers for each test subject. Some persons in the project had more markers tested, some had fewer. The more markers tested, the more accurate the interpretations of the test results can be, but the greater the cost. A 37 marker test is sufficient to give a first approximation of whether two individuals share a relatively recent common male ancestor. The actual values obtained for the individual markers for any given test subject are not shown. What is shown is the number of mutations ('step mutations" or or "point mutations" for each tesst subject, compared to a "Modal Signature" for the results as a whole.
ModeEach of the 37 markers examined in this study have a range of possible values (e.g.10 to 16). The value used for each marker is the the statistical "mode" for all test results for that particular marker.
Point Mutationsif a test result for a particular marker differs from the Modal Signature, it shows a single "point mutation". E.g., if the value of a particular marker in the modal signature is "11", and its value in a specific test subject is "15" the number of step mutations is "1".
Stepwise Mutations The mathematical difference between the value of a particular marker in a specific test subject, and its value in the The Modal Signature. E.g., if the value of a particular marker in the modal signature is "11", and its value in a specific test subject is "15" the number of step mutations is "4".
Percent MutationsPoint Mutations/total markers tested for each test. using "percent point mutations" more readily allows comparisons between subjects for whom a different number of markers were considered. Comparisons for individuals taking the 12 marker test are probably not reliable, and a percent mutation has not been calculated for these results.

Significance

The more point mutations that appear in a comparison between individuals, the further back in time the common ancestor lies. In general, on a 37 marker test more than 4 point mutations (a differnce of 10%) probably means that the common ancestor lies further back than there is much hope of identifying a common ancestor. Most of the test subjects participating in the Kilgore YDNA project show a mutation rate of 10% or less.

Data

These data are are based on a "modal signature" for all publicly available results for the Kilgore YDNA project. The data show the number of markers for each test result, plus the total number of point and step-wise mutations. For simplicity purposes changes in individual markers have not been shown.
Percent Mutations is based on the fraction of Point Mutations/N, where N is the totla number of markers tested for each test subject. In general, the higher the percent, the greater the number of mutations identified, and the more time has elapsed since persons taking the test shared a common ancestor.
