torrance.ged Ready for Review [20 June 2009]

Welcome to WeRelate! WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded your GEDCOM, your next step is to preview what your pages will look like and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. When you have finished your review, your GEDCOM will be imported. Click here to review your GEDCOM.

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [4 August 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded torrance.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate lines and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Samuel McClintic - added with your recent gedcom [9 August 2010]

Hello, I noticed you added the following person in your recent gedcom:

Samuel McClintic, with no information (no birthdate, or other information). Can you provide the source of your information that he was a son of this family? I have no records of a son Samuel of this family.

Also, you added William Gray Torrance as a son of Hugh Torrance and Mary Boreland. This William Torrance should have been merged with William G. Torrance, who had already been added and had the same birthdate as your William Gray Torrance (same person). Since WeRelate has only one page (card) for each person, it is important that duplicate persons be merged in the gedcom upload process, rather than adding an additional page for the same person.

In addition, you changed the place of death for Hugh Torrance from Franklin County, Pennsylvania to "Frankling" County, PA. This was obviously a typo that should not have been changed. Please try to be careful not to add incorrect information in future gedcom uploads.

In addition, you added a "Mrs. Torrance", b. 1695, as the wife of Sgt. Hugh Torrance. Since their first son Albert was born in 1699 (just 4 years later), this would have been quite impossible. This addition should not have been uploaded and your gedcom should have been corrected before uploading. I have reverted this family to the prior information.

Thanks,

Jim - Volunteer Administrator on WeRelate--Delijim 09:15, 5 August 2010 (EDT)

My apologies! I'm still a relative WeRelate newbie and somewhat blindly uploaded a gedcom prepared by a family member. I'll definitely be much more careful in the future. --Profzoom 00:00, 8 August 2010 (EDT)

OK, in the future, if you upload a gedcom and you see errors or major discrepancies with families already on WeRelate, you should probably research those families and check your sources (especially primary sources) to see if it is supported by factual information. Then, when you are sure of the credibility of the sources, your gedcom can be re-uploaded. Unfortunately, much of the genealogy on other sites (Ancestry, Rootsweb, FamilyTreeMaker, Family Search, etc.) contain major errors or flaws, which almost never get corrected. It is best to concentrate on families that you know are adequately sourced and researched and work on them first.

Best regards,

Jim:) Volunteer Administrator on WeRelate--Delijim 19:21, 9 August 2010 (EDT)
