  1. Take the WeRelate tour to see what you can do.
  2. Watch the "Getting Started" tutorial video to learn how to make ancestor web pages.
  3. Explore the Step by step Tutorials, if needed.

If you need any help, I will be glad to answer your questions. Just click on my signature link below and then click on the “Leave a message” link under my name in the upper left corner of my profile page. Thanks for participating and see you around! --Ronni 10:01, 5 December 2007 (EST)

Error importing export-geni.ged [4 December 2007]

We had an error while attempting to import your GEDCOM. This is most likely our fault. We will review the error and should have your pages ready tomorrow (or Monday if tomorrow falls on a weekend). There is no need to re-import your GEDCOM file.

For questions or problems, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org.

export-geni.ged appears to overlap a previously-imported GEDCOM [5 December 2007]

The pages from this GEDCOM have not yet been generated because they appear to match pages from a GEDCOM you have previously imported to WeRelate.

If you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM and you want to replace that tree with this GEDCOM, you need to delete that tree first so duplicates aren't created when you import this GEDCOM. Go to the Family Tree page, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the "delete" link next to that tree. Please be aware that any pages in that tree that are being watched by others won't get deleted. Once that tree is deleted you can create a new tree and re-upload this GEDCOM into it. (We're planning to make re-uploading GEDCOM files much simpler later this Fall.)

If you don't think you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM, or if the two GEDCOM's don't overlap that much, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org and we'll go ahead with the import.

Hi, I wanted to let you know that we're looking into this problem. GENI outputs a rather unusual GEDCOM and we haven't seen too many of them yet so we're still working through a few problems importing their format. We hope to have the problem resolved later this evening.--Dallan 11:37, 5 December 2007 (EST)
I've been looking at your GEDCOM, and there seem to be some problems with the character encoding. For example, consider the submitter information found near the top of the GEDCOM file has the following name "Judith יטה Cohen"
As you can see, there is a name, Judith Cohen, with some characters in between. Do you know what those characters are supposed to be? Also, consider this individual which is found near the top of the GEDCOM: "Moritz משה /Shwartz/"
If you could let us know what these names are supposed to look like it will help us track down the problem with the encoding. Feel free to answer right here on your talk page, because I'm watching it. Thanks! -Nathan 22:51, 5 December 2007 (EST)

You got it right, the characters are the Hebrew names of the people. In those two instances they are correct and also in the right order. I dont know why there are slashes by the name shwartz, but the file isnt that big, and its not by the name Cohen, so I can correct any of them where they show up.
Thank you so much :)

Judith -- Thanks for clarifying -- that helps a lot! I'm working on fixing our software to correctly handle this (right to left), and hopefully it will be ready by sometime on Saturday. -Nathan 11:11, 6 December 2007 (EST)

I see you have that ability to have seperate field for names, including religious names. I dont know if its possible, if it makes things easier or harder, but... if you could put the Hebrew text in a field for religious names that would be great.
I used the Hebrew for two reasons, to preserve the history and help with genealogy - we name religious names after the dead, so it is more consistent than English names, and can help show a pattern of geneology. Secondly is so that those who are in Israel and are only using Hebrew can search and find the names.
thank you for everything!

So I've been trying to get your GEDCOM to work, and it looks like we still have some bugs with right to left languages, but we won't have a chance to fix these bugs for a little while. However, we do eventually plan on supporting right to left languages. Sorry! -Nathan 23:54, 8 December 2007 (EST)
I looked at your GEDCOM file as well. We use the person's primary name for the page title, and having Hebrew characters in the title seems to cause problems for us. Most genealogy programs (don't know aobut Geni though) allow you to specify both primary and alternate names. Would it be feasible for you to list the English name as the primary name and list the Hebrew name as an alternate name in your GEDCOM?--Dallan 16:54, 9 December 2007 (EST)

Can you guys just delete the Hebrew Characters? Geni does not have alternate fields and that is the only place I now have the information.--JudithSara 17:35, 9 December 2007 (EST)

That's an interesting idea. Let me talk with Nathan (who wrote the GEDCOM uploader) about it. It seems like that could work.--Dallan 14:13, 10 December 2007 (EST)

Sorry about the delay in getting back to you on this, but your GEDCOM is currently uploading. The Hebrew character should still be in the name fields and so forth, just not in the titles as they've been filtered out of the titles because we don't handle right to left characters in the titles yet. Let us know if you have any additional feedback, and thanks for using WeRelate.org! -Nathan 00:51, 15 December 2007 (EST)

Problem with Gedcom Import [17 December 2007]

It did come through and there were no problems with the hebrew.... BUT For some reason it cam out as my cousins family. The main name was Diana Hamlet, with her family listed, and I was just listed as Living Cohen - Was that a problem with the Gedcom or with the import?--JudithSara 18:46, 17 December 2007 (EST)

You could rename the tree and mark yourself as primary by going to the page and clicking on the make primary button in the top left menu bar (it looks like a bullseye). Your information is not on the tree because you are living. This is a public website and it is not wise to post your vital data on the internet. As a default, the system edits out living info. Just FYI if the WeRelate agent is a robot and can't respond. If you need help, have questions or comments, please leave a message at my talk page. Welcome.  :)--sq 23:04, 19 December 2007 (EST)
