Next step: Review your GEDCOM [19 September 2017]

You're not done yet!

Now that you have uploaded Orzechowicz_Janik Tree_091417_.ged into our review program, it is time for you to match your data to ours. Your next step is to review and resolve any potential warnings that your file might be showing and to match place names, source names and families to pages that may already exist in our database.

Notes:

  • You must complete all the steps before your GEDCOM can be considered for import. - We will keep your file in the queue for two months to give you time to finish, and you do not have to finish all at once.
  • If you did not follow the instructions for preparing your data before uploading your file or if your file does not contain at least one date and place for each person with sources, it is likely that your file will be rejected.
  • Volunteers are here to help. Please read the instructions first, but if you get stuck or have any questions, you can leave a message on the page for the GEDCOM review team. One of our volunteers will respond shortly.
  • Once you have completed the review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import on the last screen, one of our volunteer administrators will review the file again and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24-48 hours. Please allow a little extra time around the holidays. When the import is finalized, you will receive a follow up message here on your Talk page.

Dlhá nad Oravou place name [24 September 2017]

Moved from User talk:GayelKnott
Welcome [24 September 2017]
Thank you, Gayel, for helping to clean up the Janik side of my family tree! Your edits look great, and I truly appreciate your work as I begin my journey to trace my familial history! I do have a question about the village in Slovakia from where my mothers' relatives seem to have originated. One of the few tidbits of information that I got from my mother before she passed was that one of her sisters here in the USA was corresponding with relatives in Slovakia, but the town's name is Dlha nad Oravu. Records about some of my ancestors reflect this town. So, maybe the name was truncated to just "Dlha" (which I believe is a larger town)? -Dave Orzechowicz--oze 13:36, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

Hi, Dave. I've moved your comment over here to your page, so it will hopefully be easier for you to find my answer.
I can totally sympathize with your concern/questions about place names in Slovakia for Anton Janik. I have a great grand-father who emigrated from what is now Slovakia -- he was born in Hungary and lived in Austria without moving before he emigrated; the village was then in Czechoslovakia and is now in Slovakia, and you know the name changed every time the country changed. Add to that, most people in North America, including me, know very little about eastern European place names and how they changed, and you can easily end up with a problem trying to get it entered into WeRelate.
That said, I did some checking. Dlhá nad Oravou is in Wikipedia, which says it is now in Dolný Kubín District in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia. Dolný Kubín is in WeRelate, but Dlhá nad Oravou is not. I'll try to add Dlhá nad Oravou for you. The name would then read: Dlhá nad Oravou, Dolní Kubín, Slovensko, Czechoslovakia, and that is the name that you will want to enter.
The other problem, especially for eastern Europe, is that WeRelate maintains all place names as they were in a certain year (and I'm afraid I can't remember the year exactly). This makes sense for a lot of place names, especially in the United States, since it prevents a lot of duplication. It can be a major pain for eastern European names, though. The best way to handle that on a person page is to put the place name in the way it is in WeRelate, then add what is called a "pipe" | and then add whatever the name was at the time your ancestor was there. This is something that you may end up needing to do, as it looks like Anton's family may have originally been in Hungary rather than Slovakia. Something to check out, anyway.
Hope this helps. Gayel--GayelKnott 20:22, 24 September 2017 (UTC)

Okay, looks like we got Dlhá nad Oravou entered, and it's working. I cleaned up a couple of other place names for Anton, but there are still some that I'm not sure about, so you will probably want to look at them. The ones in red ink stand out, of course, but there is another you might want to look at -- a residence "Dlha" in blue ink that is "piped" from a place in Hungary. This may have been the computer's best guess (computers are not always very smart), or it may have been what you wanted, I'm not sure. --GayelKnott 20:55, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
