TRS-data link, and apology [10 January 2010]

Thanks so much for the link you sent back in August, Debbie! Sorry about the delay here. We lost internet connection, and then the computer itself, before you posted this. We very recently got both back, finally.......

I appreciate the info, and will check it out. Have you used the site and found it useful?

Thanks again, Linda--LindaS 14:47, 10 January 2010 (EST)

Hello Linda, Good to hear from you. Welcome back to WeRelate. Sorry to hear about your recent internet & computer issues. I too have had computer issues and had lost my favorites so I appreciated the reminder about the TRS website. Yes I have used the TRS website as an addition to the BLM GLO website. Many of my ancestors lived in rural areas. The following state are now in the TRS website system - AR , AZ, CA, CO, ID, KS, MT, ND, NE, NM, NV, OK, OR, SD, UT, WA and WY Have fun, Debbie Freeman --DFree 15:19, 10 January 2010 (EST)

Double ID [19 February 2010]

Debbie,

Somehow I have managed to get two ID's. Both seem to be b.holmes.

But all my early entries are on one and my current id no longer shows the early entries in my Dashboard.

Who can I contact?

Cheers, Buddy--B.holmes 07:29, 19 February 2010 (EST)

Hello Buddy, Sorry I did not catch this. From a quick and short glance it looks like you might have accidentally created two ID's? One ID has a small h, the other a large H. User B.holmes or User B.Holmes. Are you both? I will contact someone to help verify this, and help figure out a solution. Thanks, Debbie Freeman --DFree 08:19, 19 February 2010 (EST)

Beginner's Questions [26 March 2010]

Thanks for the warm welcome Debbie. Also offering to answer questions.

1.In uploading a gedcom file, does your software strip out the personal info for living folks or does the gedcom need to be devoid of them entirely?

Yes Please. If you have not loaded your GEDCOM yet. You can choose to keep private some people in your GEDCOM. If you have listed "living" people as sources. That is usually not possible. After you upload a GEDCOM on to WeRelate, you then review your GEDCOM. It is not loaded onto WeRelate yet. You then can pick and choose what people, sources you want loaded on to WeRelate.

2.Do I need to strip out all living Sources given me by living persons and them replace them on line as I get their permission?

Yes Please. If they give permission you can make a more general source like "Turner Family Descendant" or "WeRelate User: Turner" if they are WeRelate Users too. Or if they have a GEDCOM elsewhere you can say "Rootsweb User Turner". They are examples.

3. Is there a listing of acceptable source documents? Not really. We do have Source: or MySource: areas. Either is acceptable. Source: are Community Sources like the census. MySource: is like a death certificate for your grandmother for example. 4. What about the family oral histories? It is up to you of course. You could make it a MySource or you could add it to a Person: page that the oral history is about. I don't mind being challenged for that is healthy. I just don't want to look like an escapee from Ancestry.com and have all my balloons popped during the first round! It may be better if i just find a common ancestor already in your database and individually input my entries one at a time; test its validity and build on it. I have about 6 years experience in this hobby. I do have to keep reminding myself that it is a hobby and not a job!

Welcome. Please do not worry about looking like an escapee from Ancestry.com. We recognize that WeRelate does have a "learning curve". Many people are not familiar with Wiki's. You might find uploading a GEDCOM is easier. You can of course create a single wiki page for a new ancestor, or you could search WeRelate (top of page) and locate your ancestor Person: page that is already uploaded on WeRelate. You then choose to "edit" on top of page. You can then add what is missing, or you can "watch" the Person: page too. When you add information on a wiki Page you will "watch" that page.

Thanks for your kindness and help, Hope this helps. Remember we do have written and video tutorials too. Jayharris--Jayharris 22:06, 25 March 2010 (EDT) Hello Jayharris Welcome. To make it easier I have added my answers just below your questions. Good Luck, Debbie Freeman --DFree 22:55, 25 March 2010 (EDT)

Welcome message suggestion [6 April 2010]

Hi Debbie, Since you do the welcomes you probably get a lot of new user questions. Perhaps we should update the message to tell them how to find the Support page now that we have one. What do you think? --Judy (jlanoux) 17:56, 5 April 2010 (EDT)

Hello Judy, Nice to hear from you. Oddly enough I am not getting as many new user questions as I used to. Even then it was not that many who would send me a message. I do not have a problem with your suggestion. Maybe you could suggest that to Dallan & Solveig and the WeRelate admin group? I was thinking of offering a suggest myself too. How about adding a link to the new free familysearch genealogy training videos? Have you seen them? What do you think of them? Thanks, Debbie Freeman --DFree 18:25, 5 April 2010 (EDT) Hi Debbie, Adding a link to the Support page seems like a good idea to me too. (I don't think we need links to the familysearch genealogy training videos; they would probably be better in a research guide.) Would you mind editing the welcome template to add the Support page link? Thanks!--Dallan 08:37, 6 April 2010 (EDT) Hello Dallan, OK I have changed the Welcome1 Template to add a link to the Support page. What do you think? I checked and the link works. Reviewing GEDCOM for Jasper Leslie and Descendants [12 May 2010]

Debbie, I just found this site by listening to a the Family Tree podcast. It seems a perfect way to collaborate and share. My GEDCOM was selected for Admin Review and your name is listed. I notice that a lot of my people are listed as 'not connected' when they should be. And there are other errors that need my attention. What are my next steps? I think I am to wait until I hear back from you that the pages are ready to edit, but am not sure. Will continue to watch the training videos in the meantime.

The VINTON PERRY WRAY family of long ago [13 May 2010]

I watched the show DO YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE and it has peeked my curiosity about my grandfather (Vinton Perry Wray) and his family. But, every time I go into GOOGLE to look, they lock me out. I have found some really neat family names, but how do I go further. This WE RELATE has not really helped. But, I would really really like to follow this backwards. He married ELVA MARIE McFADDEN 10/19/1915 in Lakeview, Oregon. My mom, their only child ISA ELIZABETH WRAY was born 6/09/1921 in Yakima, Washington and married my dad TORS BLONDELL 7/01/1939 in Kitsap County, Washington. There are 5 of us kids born of that marriage. Dad died in December of 1993, mom died in January 1977. It would be fun to add our names to the tree and see if there are family members still around. Grandpa was born in Burrien, Michigan 4/19/1885 and Grandma in Basalm Lake, Polk County, Michigan 3/1/1886. I cannot locate any of her relatives either. So.....what can I do from here? Thanks for any advice of help you can give.

Sincerely PATRICIA ANN BLONDELL (#2 daughter of Tors & Isa Blondell) pat-blondell@hotmail.com--Patricia Blondell 23:58, 12 May 2010 (EDT)

Hello Patricia,

I looked around on the web at some of the website that I use. These might be the ones you are looking for. The Washington State Archives online website has a

WA State Death Certificate Index (time period 1907 - 1960) - Vinton Terry Wray - Died 26 March 1955 Seattle, King, WA age is about right. Son of a James Wray and Mary Spaulding.

WA State Marriage Index - Torsten Blondell and Isa Elizabeth Wray Married 7-1-1939 Kitsap Co., WA.

You might try to se if your local library will help you do an Inter Library Loan for the newspapers called the "Seattle Post Intelligencer" (Seattle P-I) or the "Seattle Times" on the week of this date of death. See if you can find an obit.

If you contact the Washington State Archives Regional Branch that has the King, Pierce, and Kitsap Co., WA records at their branch on Bellevue Community College (BCC) in Bellevue, WA they might be able to help you with paper copies which probably have more information on the paper copy. Also if you contact the Oregon State Archives in Salem, OR they could probably help you with a paper copy of the death certificate for Elva Marie McFadden Wray.

As for WeRelate it is many things at once. You can upload your GEDCOM minus the living in your database. Each person in your GEDCOM will have his or her own webpage. It is a Wiki (think Wikipediia) we have lists of locations, sources, etc. If you search for "Kitsap County, WA" it will give you an example. It is a shared and open system. If you want to work with a long distance cousin you can on WeRelate. All Users basically can edit pages. So you and your cousin can add photo's, stories, sources, etc together. It is also a community of user's that try to help each other. We are a mix of users in genealogy, some old hands, some newbies. Some really good with technology, and some still struggling with technology. Hope this helps. Welcome to WeRelate. Debbie Freeman --DFree 01:07, 13 May 2010 (EDT)

User Pages [19 May 2010]

Debbie,

I have an involved ancestor page: John Richey (9)I want to do a "probate" page and also a "Land" page. If I do this as a "User" Txbluebell6/John Richey Probate page will other researchers be able to edit it? If not, how can I do this so others can do edits?

Thanks, Pam--Txbluebell6 15:01, 19 May 2010 (EDT) Hello Pam, I will try to help. It has been a while so I might be a list rusty. It is always a nice idea to send a message to the other WeRelate Users keeping them in the loop before you start. Nice manners basically. I looked and there is already a mysource page (if I remember right) for the probate and land? Next time add it as a source page and anyone can edit it. Please add a note to the source page explaining you wish it to remain a source page and why. Otherwise it might be deleted. You could add a note to the already created Mysource page (if you created it) or on that Mysource page Talk page as well. Then create an Article Page for both the probate and land mysources add a link to all four pages. If you did not create the MySources add the link to the Person Page. An article should be editable by all. Or if you prefer the mysource page should have a Talk page for it. Or people could add to the talk pages for these mysources and you could copy and paste over. Hope this helps, Debbie Freeman --DFree 15:58, 19 May 2010 (EDT)

Hello Hal, Good Morning, almost good afternoon. Where did the time go? Thank you such more for the nice comments. I will look this information up for you soon and leave you a message on your Talk Page. I appreciate that technology changes and all of us try to learn the "new tech". I know WeRelate being a wiki requires a little patience and time to learn. You CAN do this. So please do not give up. We volunteer administrators, and other WeRelate User are here to help. And the support area, text tutorials, video tutorials etc are available too. Sometimes the easiest approach is to figure out how WeRelate is different from the rest. I have done one edit on your message though. Please remember that WeRelate is a PUBLIC website, and ANYONE can see this website. So I have edited some of your contact information. People can leave you a message on your Talk Page, or if they edit a Person or Family page you are connected to. WeRelate will e-mail you automatically so you can see the changes. Next step: Review your GEDCOM [19 July 2010]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded WRRaner.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate lines and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

WRRaner.ged Imported Successfully [19 July 2010]

The pages from your GEDCOM have been generated successfully. You may now: launch the Family Tree Explorer to navigate your tree view your network -- If you matched families in your GEDCOM to existing families, find out to which other WeRelate users you are related.

view related pages not in your tree -- If you matched families in your GEDCOM to existing families, find out which people you are now related to that you can add to your tree (takes awhile to display for large trees).
view a searchable list of the pages in your tree -- The searchable list will be available about an hour after your tree has been imported.

documentation [9 August 2010]

This is my first time on this board. My question is this: How do I ask questions about information on genealogy - such as Gen Andrew Lewis. I am most interested in the information that he was married first to Martha Teas. Where do I find the sources for certain documentation? Sondra--Sondra 12:24, 9 August 2010 (EDT)

---

Hello WeRelate User Sondra, I looked at the WeRelate Family page on WeRelate known as "Family: Andrew Lewis & Martha Teas (1)". Some of the off site links are bad. You were right there was no WeRelate User listed as "watching" that page. I then went to Martha Teas Person Page and noticed which WeRelate User was "watching" that Page. We have been encouraging WeRelate Users to list their sources, but it is a voluntary thing. You can and are encouraged to contact that WeRelate User by leaving a message on their WeRelate User Talk page like you did mine. Or if you know the sources since it is a Wiki system you can add the source itself, or add a comment on the Family:Andrew Lewis and Martha Teas (1) Family Talk page to discuss it or add your opinion politely. Thanks for using WeRelate. Debbie Freeman, one of the volunteer admin's --DFree 13:01, 9 August 2010 (EDT)

Hello User Whitetinydog,

Thank you so much for leaving me a message on my WeRelate User Talk page. I have left you a message on your User Talk Page as well. I am a descendant of Henry Calvin Williams, or as he liked to do sometimes Calvin Henry Williams and his wife Fanny Fry (Chatterton) Williams, daughter of Henry Chatterton and Mary Ann Gasson. I would like to someday locate where Mary Ann (Gasson) Chatteron is buried. If is is OK with you I would like to copy and past portions of your message to the "Edward Chatterton's Person Page" and "Family Page". I had not known about the ship you discussed. Do you know the name of the boarding school that Mary Ann (Delves) Chatterton was involved in? Do you by chance know which religion or church that Henry Chatterton was involved with? I would be very interested in trying to locate those religous sources. I too would be very interested in copies of the these sources, or know who and where to locate these sources. Splitting Family Tree [29 August 2010]

Hi Debbie

Perhaps like other folks i think i got myself off on the wrong foot with We Relate not being familiar with Wiki . I set up my family tree based on my biological fathers surname and have connected all other surnames to that initial tree . I now realize that i probably should have had one tree for my fathers surname and a separate tree for my mothers maiden surname. Is there any way to separate the data from the one tree into two trees without starting completely over? Another question which comes to mind is what would happen if i uploaded a gedcom to you? Would it replace my existing data on werelate or merge or just add?

Thanks for the assistance

Alan--Carolina 16:02, 29 August 2010 (EDT)

Hello Alan,

WeRelate is a unified family tree concept so it is no problem. So you do not need to do anything. If it is easier for you to separate them then what you wish to do is very simple and easy to do. If you wish to separate the wife from the husband's page all you need to do is go to the We Relate person and family pages involved and choose edit. Edit (i.e. erase the person on that page then choose save. If you need help or are having trouble just leave me a message with the WeRelate person information (John Doe (1) and John and Jane Doe (4) and what you were trying to do I will help.

If on the other hand you wish to upload your maternal side GEDCOM and have not done it yet, go ahead and upload it, then in a day or so look up your duplicate people and families and merge them then you are up and running.

In the long run it makes it a bit of a mess if you delete your GEDCOM and re upload it. It is better to hand edit if possible if you can. Hope this helps, good luck, Debbie Freeman --DFree 17:41, 29 August 2010 (EDT)

Notes [13 October 2010]

I found some notes from another tree which I incorporated into my tree. I wanted to give proper attribution, but I don't know how to tell who's tree the notes came from. Can you help?

JIm Tarbet--Tarbet 20:15, 12 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Tarbet,

First if possible it is polite to try to contact the person where you located this information. Ask their permission to use this information. If not possible please give some proper sourcing citation. If not possible to get hold of someone please indicate which website and or web page you located these notes. I would probably do a basic outline about the notes. Why it was important, who it is about, who originated these notes. Did the person connected to the web page or website write these notes, or did someone else write to this person. i.e. is it a copy and paste of the notes, or is it research notes written by the person connected to the web page.

In your WeRelate Mysource/Source "Jane (Smith) Roberts notes" in the small box under the WeRelate MySource or Source write

Examples:

Website: Rootsweb - Name of the database: "Mike's Tree" - Name of Person: (if know person): Mike Murphy Date: (the latest date database was updated) Jan 02, 1999. Ancestor: Jane (Smith) Roberts (1800-1880) - Note: what about the note is important-

Hope this helps Debbie Freeman --DFree 22:21, 12 October 2010 (EDT)

My Sources Page [14 October 2010]

Debbie, I am in possession of several documents from my close family. I would like to make them available to other researchers as scanned images. can these images be placed on a "My Sources" page for all to see and download if they like?

By the way, I like your photo. It looks like we share a liking for Crackerbarrel. Is that where the photo was taken?

Jim Tarbet--Tarbet 06:20, 14 October 2010 (EDT) Hello Jim, The only big question is the copyright issue. If you have the copyright or the permission of the copyright holder, or it is an unknown copyright holder then yes you can add the image. There are help pages on WeRelate about copyright. When you upload the images please title the images something unique so you can locate it and other WeRelate User's do not accidentally think it is their images. I have a habit of adding my User name in the image title. An example could be Image "Tarbet Williams Bible" and then create a MySource Williams Bible. Since it is a MySource your User name will be added to the title by the system so you do not need to add it to the MySource. You then connect the image to the MySource. You then can add the MySource to the People Pages.

Thank You, Yes your right the photo was taken at a Cracker Barrell. Good Luck, Debbie Freeman --DFree 13:47, 14 October 2010 (EDT)

2nd Question RE Tree Branches [14 October 2010]

Debbie, In reading some of your previous answers I noticed you said something about loading the different branches of your tree as separate trees. My question is, do you recommend that I create a new tree for each of the major branches in my tree? I only have four. One each for the family names of my parents and my wife's parents. The other option, I guess, is to add each branch to my existing wiki tree and merge them. I need simple!! So which method do you recommend?

Jim Tarbet--Tarbet 07:37, 14 October 2010 (EDT) Hello Jim, The last I knew and I think is still true is it all depends on the amount of people in your family file (GEDCOM). If you have thousands of people in your GEDCOM file then the system will probably have a fit. This is on the list of "to do". Please divide it into smaller GEDCOM files so the people are in the hundreds. WeRelate prefers hundreds or less. And remember after you upload the GEDCOM you then need to go thru the WeRelate upload steps, check the warnings, etc. I do not know which program you use to keep track of your ancestors but many GEDCOM programs (Family Tree Maker, Legacy, etc) should have a problem report or something like that. It will tell you if a mother is too young to give birth to this child, etc. That way you can fix many problems before you upload it to WeRelate. WeRelate does have a help page for GEDCOM upload page to help you. You might want to check it out before you upload the GEDCOM. Please also remember "NO LIVING PEOPLE, OR CONTACT INFO OF LIVING PEOPLE PLEASE!!" like real addresses, phone numbers, etc this is on the Internet. Anyone can see this.

If you are like some of us you might find other WeRelate User's who are researching the same ancestors I try to contact the other User about that ancestor and try to play nicely before I merge the ancestors page (sometimes they reply but on occasion they do not, it is not necessary just being polite). Good Luck, Debbie Freeman --DFree 14:14, 14 October 2010 (EDT)

Reply to Questions [15 October 2010]

Thanks Debbie, So, As I understand your answer, I should set up a new tree for each af my branches and upload to that, using that tree to make the corrections needed and then maintain 4 different trees? I think that's the right way to do it also as I have a total of over 7000 people in my complete tree. The other point is that all these branches connect through me or my wife, and we're still alive and won't show in any of them. Is that the way you see it as best? You asked what program I am using, It's Family Tree Builder from My Heritage. That software does not have anything like a warnings page. I've needed a page like that for a long time and am so glad to have access to it.I already know there are errors in my data, but isolating them has been a real chore until WeRelate became available.--Tarbet 05:24, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Tarbet, Glad to see you have found the message. I have never used Family Tree Builder from My Heritage so I am unfamiliar with it. I use the Deluxe version of Legacy instead. If it was me I would do the following. On my computer I would look carefully at the Family Tree Builder help files. Find out how to make a copy of my complete family file. Think of your original file as your backup file not to be touched, then looking at the help files again figure out how to break up your copy file you just created into smaller family files. I would see if you could disconnect the deceased ancestor you choose as the root person for the GEDCOM file. I made it easier by choosing a deceased ancestor that I was familiar with my great grandparents. I then had a root person for each GEDCOM file, my great grandparent. Also one that I knew who was married to whom. After each great grandparent or whatever ancestor you choose to use as your deceased root ancestor you then look again at your program's help file and create a GEDCOM file by selecting that deceased ancestor and all their deceased ancestors, deceased siblings, deceased spouses from your copy family file. With the smaller copy files you made you can then create a GEDCOM file and upload the GEDCOM file to WeRelate. Hope this makes some sense. Sorry to here that your program does not have a problem report for you to use. After you upload the smaller GEDCOM's one at a time of only deceased ancestors WeRelate will highlight in the GEDCOM upload the warnings, etc for you to deal with. It will take a little time to do it this way but in the end I hope you will be less frustrated. After the WeRelate upload, going thru the WeRelate warnings and after your GEDCOM file has gone thru the WeRelate review and released into WeRelate (i.e. webpages created in WeRelate) you then can manually connect the ancestors who are spouses, or if needed ask for some help with detailed information like Jane Smith (2) is married to John Doe (4) I would like/need help in connecting them please. Also please remember that WeRelate is a shared system so it is likely you will share an ancestor or two with another user. Also since it is a wiki system it is possible that helpful other WeRelate User's might help you make that ancestors page better since they might know of some sources you had not known about. In time hopefully all the WeRelate person and family pages will be better sourced than they are now. We hope. Good Luck Debbie Freeman --DFree 12:19, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

Photo [15 October 2010]

Debbie, I uploaded a photo of me. now how do I get it to show on my talk page, or any other page for that matter?

Jim--Tarbet 13:40, 15 October 2010 (EDT) Hello Jim, With a little practice it is pretty easy. In WeRelate If you search under the blue "Search" at the top of the page. Then choose namespace "HELP" then choose keyword "Images" it will take you to a list of possible WeRelate pages. Choose "Help:Images Tutorial" from the possible list and it should answer your questions and tell you how to do what you want. Good Luck, Debbie Freeman --DFree 14:01, 15 October 2010 (EDT)

Sorry!! I forgot to mention after you have reviewed and learned from the Tutorial page, and have uploaded your image, you then go to your User Page, choose edit, then at the top of the edit section where you have written about yourself add the following straight double brackets I do not know what they are called it is a bit of wiki code, then add Image then : the name of your image you have uploaded then . then jpg or whatever type of picture file you have it saved as then the ]] again. Then choose Save. I will try an example Image:Ground.jpg When your User Page uploads after saving you should see your image in your User Page. Hope this makes sense. Tarbet GEDCOM [16 October 2010]

Debbie, I uploaded my Tarbet tree, went through all of the Warnings and made corrections on WeRelate and my own tree, matched all the families, and then deleted it. I then made a new GEDCOM from my local tree and uploaded it. But I can't find where the Warnings and matches page is. I just wanted to check it for any other actions I need to take. Can you point me to the right place?

Thanks

Crossett Gedcom [17 October 2010]

Debbie, Thanks. I was in the midst of reading the instructions for matching families when my eyes went out of focus. I let it go until I can read it again when rested. The matching process is a bit daunting. Also, I got a lot of warnings of man and wife having the same surname. These are because I would enter a Mrs or a wife of plus the surname. I figured its easier to edit them when and if someone comes up with a real name. Its gonna be a while to learn this stuff. Thanks again, Tom Crossett--Bigdeacon 07:43, 17 October 2010 (EDT)

Photos [19 October 2010]

Debbie, I have a good collection of photos and docs for many of the people in my tree which I would like to upload to Images. Is there a way to upload them in groups, or must I upload each one separately? 2nd question re; photos. On each person page there is a shadow of either a male or female, can a photo be inserted in this place? How is that done?--Tarbet 12:22, 19 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Tarbet,

Yes sorry you must upload each image one by one. Please remember copyright issues and privacy issues too before you upload them. The Shadow image is only because there is no image of that ancestor uploaded yet. You may upload their images and then link that image to their person page usually it is automatically inserted in the bottom of the person page. If you ask how to load their image to the top of their person page or family page question on the WeRelate Support page (the link should be on the main page) or look on WeRelate under Search then keywords the directions on how to set the image to the top of the page should show up. I admit I am a little fuzzy on the how to do that myself. Good Luck, Debbie Freeman --DFree 14:56, 19 October 2010 (EDT)

Hi,

Once you load images to a person page all your have to do is check the "primary" box on the left and it puts the image at the top. You may only have one primary image. Thanks. --Txbluebell6 16:18, 19 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Txbluebell6, Thank You I appreciate the addition and reminder on how to do this. Debbie Freeman --DFree 16:57, 19 October 2010 (EDT)

Newtons [22 October 2010]

Debbie, Would you explain what is going on with my Newton family tree. People are propagating them and changing people and merging and who knows what else they are doing to my family. I looked in my watch list and there must be 100 entries there, now I'm getting email after email that people are being changed etc. I don't understand the posts. I'm not in a panic, just want to know what's happening.

Thanks Jim--Tarbet 23:16, 20 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Jim, It sounds like your Person & Family Pages are being created? I will have more time tomorrow afternoon and will try to figure out more. It could be that they are being merged with existing pages? Please be patient with me and give me a day or so. If there is a problem I will pass on the information. Any problem can be easily solved. Thanks Debbie Freeman --DFree 00:38, 21 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Jim, Hope you are having a good morning. I was glad to see that you have some merges etc already. OK I will begin to clean up some of your pages. Do not worry I will not be deleting anything that is useful or genealogically pertinent. Just small tidying. You have UID, RIN's, et. also some of your locations are needing a little cleaning, MA instead of Massachusetts for instance. You might think in your next GEDCOM to figure out how to not import that extra code. It is really only helpful to your unique database on your computer. I think we have a pretty good help pages on this on WeRelate. If you have any concerns please post me a message. Thanks, Debbie Freeman --DFree 12:33, 22 October 2010 (EDT)

Lost relatives [25 October 2010]

Debbie, I found several members of one of my trees who were not picked up by WeRelate when I loaded my gedcom. I don't know if the Gedcom was at fault or is the import messed up. Has this type of thing happened before? Do you know what the solution is to make sure all members of the family show up in my tree? The way I found out about this was I have a photo of a late family member and went in search of his page, and it wasn't there. Checked for his parents but they were not there. found his grandparents, but they had an uncle of the grandfather as a son. really strange. I guess the real question is "should I upload a new Gedcom of this family after deleting the current tree?, or should I try to correct the current tree? Jim--Tarbet 13:02, 23 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Jim, Please do not delete and add another GEDCOM. Let's try to correct the current trees. There could more than one reason why this occurred. If you could make a list of the missing ancestors that you noticed to be begin with I could help you look for them. Also please pass on which ancestor is disconnected to whom. I will help you for the first couple and then you can learn how to do that yourself. I do need details like John Doe (7) is now the son of Jack Doe (5) and Jane Doe (2). He should be the son of Henry Doe (2) and Jane Doe (3) as an example. I noticed last night when I was editing on one person page there was no death date and the person was born under 110 years ago (1904). That was a problem for the WeRelate software. Or you had another Person Page with the first name being Joh. There was not enough information to figure out if this was a misspelling or that was his name. You might see if you can add more details on some of these person pages since more than a few have very little details they could have been considered living by the software even though they were living in the 1700's. Software is very literal. Dot's or Dashes no inbetween's. Another possible reason is that the person was merged with another copy of the ancestor and the WeRelate number could have been changed to the earlier number. Let's concentrate on what you have uploaded now and you can make a list of the missing for later. OK? I appreciate your willingness to my small edits that I have been doing. Hope you are OK with that too. Thanks, Debbie Freeman --DFree 13:51, 23 October 2010 (EDT)

This is what I found the other day and wrote you about. Looks like 16 people no in WERelate that are in my Gedcom.

Jim--Tarbet 08:34, 24 October 2010 (EDT)

I Just looked at James Campbell Queen the first missing person. He and his wife have over 60 descendants which of course all also missing. William McDonald Queen, one of his sons has over half of these. Are you sure that the best way is to make pages for each one instead of a new gedcom? I can make a gedcom of John William Queen and descendants only and merge them. That should add all 60 people at one time. What do you think? Jim--Tarbet 08:59, 24 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Jim, Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. Since you have found it is about 60 people I too would make a gedcom of James Campbell Queen and his descendants only and merge them. That should add all 60 people at one time. Please make sure they are ALL DECEASED please. ALL need/have a death date or are born at least 110 years, i.e 1900 Please. Brian Archie Queen [25 October 2010]

Debbie, There is a source on this page that I did not put there. Can you tell who did put it there? The reason I ask is that there are only 3 people in the world that have the source document. The author is my brother, then I have a copy and my sister has a copy. as far as I know we are the only three people who could have posted this source information.

Jim--Tarbet 23:44, 23 October 2010 (EDT)

--- Hello Jim,

That source is your source, it must have been a source in your GEDCOM. When you imported your GEDCOM you imported this source. If your brother objects you can delete it or if he would like authorship I think it is already there. I did add a little edit. You can of course delete it you prefer it is your MySource. Or you can edit like the other pages you created. Hope this helps. Thanks Debbie Freeman --DFree 20:33, 24 October 2010 (EDT)

Hello Jim, The way WeRelate works if an ancestor was married or had children then they have a Person Page like Person:Brian Archie Queen and the Family:Brian Archie Queen and Jane Doe. Advice on locating a great uncle [26 October 2010]

I accidentally stumbled upon this site through a google search of Ora Ritter Rena. I had attempted to do some research on 2007 and got stuck going further than that. My mom was pleased to learn the origin of her maiden name (Ritter). Now, here is where I need some advice. Ora had two sons. My grandfather Hoyt who is still alive and his older brother Fentan (aka Jack). You referenced finding bandits in the family. Well, he's ours. I learned the other day that he spent time in prison for murder (Texas or Oklahoma maybe....) I am having a horrible time locating a useful site to see if I can locate the prison he stayed in.

I did get a decent way on my dad's side.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Mike--Msrundqu 13:53, 26 October 2010 (EDT) Hello Mike, I will try to help. First it depends on the time period you are talking about, or if he is still alive. Privacy issues, etc. I would first locate him on the 1930, 1920 Federal census. If he was born after that then I would try the next possible ideas. There is no guarantee it will work though. Since you have two possible states I would contact those state archives (most have websites with their e-mail, phone numbers, or snail mail addresses) explain what you are trying to do and see if they can guide you to the next step. There is a possibility that they can help you. Possible court records, possible prison records, etc. Also do not forget that there are different prisons, some are state and some are Federal prisons if I remember right. You could find out what Federal Region has Texas and Oklahoma in it. The prison records seem to be good genealogical records. Good Luck, Debbie Freeman --DFree 14:42, 26 October 2010 (EDT)

John Major Conwell [29 October 2010]

I am John Major Conwell's daughter by his 1st wife, Edith Smith. I have posted my full genealogy on ancestry.com with almost 8000 people! I have quite a bit on the Conwell family, but of course, I don't have everything.

My name is Edith Robinson Conwell Irwin -- the Robinson also comes from ancestors on the Conwell side of the tree. Edith is obviously from my mother.

What is your connection to the Conwells?

My e-mail is dee@deeandtom.org (my nickname is Dee)

It makes it easier for you and the other WeRelate User Gramma's Garden to have a conversation. It is a simple edit. Question about citing indirect evidence [27 November 2010]

Hi, thanks for the welcome! I'm starting to add information to the site. How should I cite indirect evidence? If I've drawn a conclusion based on the analysis of multiple sources that do not explicitly state something, should I write something that explains how I came to that conclusion, and list the sources?--BethGatlin 03:59, 27 November 2010 (EST)

Hello Beth, Welcome to WeRelate. We appreciate you giving WeRelate a try. I would suggest both citing the sources, and also your summery on the Person page or Family page (or you could do an article page too and link to it) depending on what your conclusion is about analyzing your conclusion. That way you can retrieve it back one day (if needed computer glitches, etc) and others (your children, siblings, etc in the years to come for example) can follow your path and also conclude the same conclusion or verify for their peace of mind it is correct. Unlike today many are now saying where did Aunt Judy find this? Another thing would be that a fellow researcher can see your sources and then send you a message saying something like "you do not list source A" which you might not know about that confirms your conclusion. Such as you list child A's death certificate, but child B's death certificate (which you do not have a copy of) is more detailed and agrees with your conclusion. These are just my 2 cents though. Something for you to think about. It is up to you just remember that WeRelate is a wiki, so other users might post a message about your conclusion, agreeing or disagreeing. The better sourced the better. Take Care, Debbie Freeman --DFree 11:51, 27 November 2010 (EST)

Question about your place pg for Berkeley, Virginia [9 December 2010]

I'm checking some of the counties that were formerly in VA but now in WV and see that there are two county pages for Berkeley. One is yours with dates 1772 - 1820 which puzzles me as the county existed in VA up to 1863 when it became Berkeley, WV. I didn't want to make any changes to the page, but did want to mention that this should be looked at. I don't know what to do about having two pages for the same location so maybe you can do whatever needs to be done. And I think the 'type' should be former county. --Janiejac 16:22, 8 December 2010 (EST)

Hello Janie, I am not picky. I agree "former county" would be accurate. Please do what you need to do for your project. I found this information from a chart in the publication "How Justice Grew Virginia Counties: An abstract of their formation" page 85 by a Martha W Hiden (Jamestown Booklet No. 2). It is my cherished Virginia research source. The chart shows Berkeley County was formed from Frederick County in 1772 then parts of Berkeley County was given to Jefferson County in 1801 then parts given to Morgan County in 1820. Take Care Debbie Freeman --DFree 17:18, 8 December 2010 (EST) What your cherished source said is accurate - but some of the original Berkeley was still left and is still in existance and functioning as a county. I also learned just today by working with these counties that using 'former county' as a type is fine for extinct counties but not for VA counties that became WV. But I haven't been 'bold' enough yet to change all those 'former counties' until I get some positive feedback on that. --Janiejac 22:42, 8 December 2010 (EST) Hello Janie, I tried a few changes to the place page for Berkeley County, VA hoping to fix the page. What do you think? Please feel free to change it. Take Care, Debbie Freeman --DFree 23:51, 8 December 2010 (EST)

page not too wide now [9 December 2010]

I hope you don't mind me tweaking your talk page a bit but when pages show too wide, it really bugs me and it is an easy fix. I scrolled up until I saw where the text was s p r e a d out and knew that msg was causing a problem because the poster left a couple of spaces at the beginning of the text. Remove those extra spaces for all msgs on the page that has that spread out text and walla! it goes back to the right size. I also learned just today that it causes a problem when the signature has no space in front of it but is instead right up against the text. So many little things to learn, sigh. --Janiejac 22:34, 8 December 2010 (EST)

Hello Janie, No problem please feel free to edit to your hearts content. Take Care, Debbie Freeman --DFree 23:33, 8 December 2010 (EST)

Newbie question [12 December 2010]

I have not watched all the videos but plan to over time. I just wanted to ask a couple of questions to better understand what I'm getting into, if you don't mind.

My database is quite large, much is documented, some isn't. I'm thinking I should find particular families that I can add lines to that don't exist or that I think I can improve on rather than mass-uploading a huge GEDCOM. I experimented a few weeks ago by merging one family and adding some pictures. Today I tried to add ROBERT GILMAN (1) GEDCOM because I have better references than what is online. The GEDCOM shows this person as EXCLUDED because he is older (http://www.werelate.org/gedcom/index.php?gedcomId=5386). Am I missing a step somewhere or should I just choose a different place to begin?

I think once I get some practice it'll begin to be more clear but right now it's a bit overwhelming.

Thanks!

-Steve M.--frothingham 22:23, 11 December 2010 (EST) Hello Steve M, Welcome to WeRelate. Watching and reading the tutorials is very helpful. Also reading the support and or discussion pages helps too. I will try to help you. WeRelate is still pretty new and we on occasion come across some growing pains, etc. Very large GEDCOM's are not that easy on WeRelate or on you either if you could make smaller GEDCOM's it makes it better on you and WeRelate. We are also trying to have well sourced pages too. Unfortunately way too many people uploaded no sourced GEDCOM's or bad or sloppy sourced GEDCOM's. You have also come across another growing pain. We have had many GEDCOM's uploaded that have little or no sources on pre 1750 people. For now until a workable theory on how to deal with this issue is figured out if you are willing you can hand edit, or hand add people pages and or family pages by finding the people page like Robert Gilman (1) or family page, click on edit, add your content, then save the page. It would be great if you are willing to add sources to already existing pages. We are really trying to encourage WeRelate User's adding sources. I hope this makes some sense. Please feel free to contact me again or add a message to the support page, and I hope you are willing to adding content (people, family, sources, etc) by this by hand adding. Thanks, Debbie Freeman --DFree 23:58, 11 December 2010 (EST)
