Eliakim Cooley, rem. to East Windsor, and d. 11 July 1748. HUGH,
Springfield, m. 1645, Mary Lewis from Wales, had Hannah, b. 1 Aug.
1646; Samuel 8 Jan. 1648, d. next yr; and Joshua, 26 Oct. 1650,
by his mo. 4 Mar. foll. and she plead. guilty in May. aft. hav. been just
bef. acq. of the absurd charge of witchcraft on a ch. of the rev. Mr.
Moxon. The unhap. woman had, in her native ld. suffer. abuse by a
former h. who sev. yrs bef. she came hither, abandon. her, and her charact.
was so fair, that we must believe undoubt, she was insane. But the
h. was less lucky in his jury, who convict. him of a sim. crime, when, in
1652, the sentence of death was refused by the court, and the Gen. Court
had sense eno. to discharge the prisoner. See Hutch. I. 179. Soon
after both of the sad harmless felons rem. to Watertown. There he d.
18 June 1675, and his w. Ruth d. 8 Aug. 1576. The first w. I fear,
suffer. death for murder of her ch. but see Col. Rec. III. 229 and 273.
In Drake's Hist. of Boston 322 et seq. is a valua. portion of the evid.
* JAMES, Gloucester, eldest ch. of Jeffery, was freem. 1682, m. 18 Dec.
1688, Hannah Younglove, had James, b. 1690; Eliezer; and Joseph;
and d. 1 Oct. 1733, and the w. or wid. d. a few mos. bef. or aft. He
was rep. 1710 and 4 yrs. more. See Babson, 121. JEFFERY,
Gloucester, m. 11 Nov. 1657, Sarah, d. of William Vinson,
had James, b. 18 Dec. 1658; Jeffery, 25 Jan. 1661; Sarah,
19 Apr. 1663; John, 24 May 1666; Elizabeth 22 Mar. 1669; Jeremiah,
28 May 1672; Nathaniel, 16 Mar. 1675; Abigail, 25 Mar. 1678;
Ebenezer, 5 Jan. 1681, d. soon; and Ebenezer, again, 28 Jan. 1682.
He was, it is said, b. a 1631, at Alphington, near Exeter, adj. Topsham,
Co. Devon (and we know that in the E. part of that sh. the name is extens.
diffus.) and d. 16 or 19 Aug. 1689; and his wid. d. 1 Jan. 1708.
His gr.-s. Moses, min. of Byfield parish in Newbury, wh. d. 14 Dec.
1783, was f. of Theophilus, H. C. 1769, Ch. Just. of Mass. one of the
princip. framers of the Constit. of this Comwth. for whose successf. concoction,
after many yrs. of anarchy, the way was chiefly prepared by his
"Essex Result," the quintessence of our free Instit. He was the
most learned lawyer in the gen. opin. of his contempo. that ever
appear. on our side of the Atlantic. JEFFERY, Gloucester, s. of the
preced. freem. 1690; m. 5 May 1686, Abigail Younglove, perhaps
d. of the sec. Samuel of Ipswich, had Jonathan, Samuel, and Jeremiah,
liv. to be nam. in his will of 1734, and all bless. with fams.
JOHN, York, had John, b. 31 July 1677; Elizabeth 9 Feb. 1680; Mary, 13
Oct. 1682; Elihu; Rachel; Christian; and Mercy. He took o. of alleg.
1681. Elizabeth m. 12 Apr. 1698, Peter Hinkson; and Mary m. Nicholas
