Episc. form; and Ann, 5 Nov. 1681, d. soon. In the ferocious prosecut.
1692, for witchcraft, he was so lenient, or judiciously incredul. of the
crimes imput. to his neighb. as to be strongly suspect. of the same horrid
or ludicrous offence. Abbot's Hist. 18, 19. HUMPREY, Ipswich,
came in the Elizabeth from Ipswich, Eng. 1634, aged 40, with w.
Bridget, 30; and ch. Hannah, 9; John, 3; Martha, 2; and Mary, 1; had
b. here, Moses; Sarah, 1638; and Rebecca; freem. 6 May 1635, rep.
1635, d. 1655. His will, made 21 July, was pro. 20 Sept. foll. Hannah
m. Daniel Rolfe, and next, 12 June 1658, Nicholas Holt, and d. 20 June
1665; Martha m. William Beale; and all the other ds. were m. one to
Nicholas Wallis. HUMPHREY, Rowley, physician, s. of Moses, rem. to
Newbury, there by w. Sarah had Dorothy, b. 19 Dec. 1692; Joshua, 24
Feb. 1695; Sarah, 14 Jan. 1697; Humphrey, 1700, d. young; Daniel,
13 Feb. 1702; Moses, 17 Feb. 1707; and Betty, 16 May 1713; and
he d. 11 May 1717. His wid. m. 9 June 1719, Edward Sargent. JOHN,
Rowley 1651, s. of Humphrey the first, brot. by his f. from Eng. was
never m. it is thot. rem. 1657, to Marblehead, d. 1660. In Essex Inst. II.
29, Cheever says, he was prosecut. in 1652, for familiar. with the devil.
Either the folly was not prov. or it was not capital. JOHN, Salem,
youngest s. of Gov. Simon, m. 17 June 1679, as one report is, but by
ano. 11 June 1677, Sarah, d. of Rev. William Perkins of Topsfield, had
Simon, b. 14 Apr. 1682; John, 30 Jan. 1693; Margaret, 27 Nov. 1696;
and Samuel, 4 Aug. 1699. Perhaps he had others, Mercy, and three
other ds. for the removal from one town to ano. sometimes caus. omission
in rec. of either. In 1681 he was of Salem, but prob. liv. most of his
days at Topsfield, yet perhaps had some est. at Rowley, d. 11 Jan. 1719.
MOSES, Ipswich, s. of the first Humphrey of the same, had four ch. of
wh. we kn. with certainty only Humphrey, b. 6 Jan. 1670, bef. ment.
SAMUEL, Boston, eldest br. of the preced. freem. 1656, went to Eng.
next yr. and spent four yrs. as his mo. tells, mak. verses on each event;
there prob. stud. for a profession; was a physician, rep. for Andover
