I. Samuel Guthrie Gilcrest; Born February 1st, 1837, in Guernsey County, Ohio. As a young man he taught in McLean County, Illinois. In 1862 he was in Union County, Ohio, and started in his life of farming and stock raising. Married Elizabeth Longbrake, September 9th, 1862, near Marysville, in that county. She was born in Union County, September 30th, 1844. When they retired from the farm they lived in Marysville. He died in Cambridge, Ohio, while visiting in the home of a granddaughter, March 8th, 1918. His widow survives and makes her home in Marysville.

1. Franklin McLean Gilcrest; Born April 22nd, 1865, in Union County, Ohio. Educated at Butler College, Indianapolis, Indiana. Married Nanette B. Nicol, January 3rd, 1894. Nanette was born March 15, 1868. Died March 2, 1920. A farmer and stock raiser; but in later years in commercial business.

2. Levi Longbrake Gilcrest; Born February 14th, 1868, in Union County, Ohio. A commercial accountant. Married Elizabeth Carter, June 12th, 1892. He died May 19th, 1893. Elizabeth was born December 26th, 1872, in Marysville, Ohio.

(1) Lonnie Gilcrest; Born, after her fathers' death, at Marysville, June 8th, 1893. Married S. M. Offord, January 10th, 1913, at Cambridge, Ohio. It was at this home that her grandfather, Samuel Guthrie Gilcrest died.

4. Samuel Shirley Gilcrest; Born August 13th, 1878, in Union County, Ohio. Married Etta Lewis, May 29th, 1904, at Aurora, Illinois.

II. William Smith Gilcrest; Born July 15th, 1839, at New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. A farmer all of his life. Married Mary Ewings, at Rutland, Illinois, March 8th, 1866. He served a four months enlistment in the civil war, in Company H, 86th Ohio volunteers, Infantry. Moved from Illinois to Adair County, Iowa, in 1876; and thence to Akron, Colorado, in 1888, and took a homestead. In the fall of 1893 he had the misfortune to lose a foot by the accidental discharge of a shotgun. He spent the rest of his days on crutches. His health was delicate for several years, and he died at Akron, Colorado, March 27th, 1901. His widow still lives, (1923) at Kettle Falls, Washington.

2. Lawrence E. Gilcrest; Born September 21st, 1869, near Rutland, Illinois. A rail road man at McCook, Nebraska. Married Maggie Woodward there May 12th, 1891. Died in Spokane, Washington, September 12th, 1914.

III. Austin Gilcrest; Born April 19th, 1842, at New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. A farmer in his earlier days. Served in the civil war about a year, Company G, 129th Ohio Volunteers, Infantry. Most of that service was in the region of Cumberland Gap. Soon after he was mustered out his health failed seriously, and he was unable to work for about five years. When he became a little stronger he became a farm manager for an old farmer by the name of William Perkins for several years, both in Illinois and Iowa. Then for several years he was with his cousin, F. H. Gilcrest, at Kearney, Nebraska, in the lumber business. After his strength began to decline again he retired to the Soldiers' Home, at Leavenworth, Kansas, where he spent most of the time of his last nine years. Here he died May 13th, 1918. Austin never married . He was to have been married in 1870 but his long continued sickness decided them to give it up by mutual consent. His intended, also, never married. Living at Kansas City since 1913 it was my privilege to be with my brother a great deal during his declining days, and it was certainly a great pleasure to us both.

IV. Adaline Gilcrest; Born January 20th,

1845, at New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. Married William Albert Hollenback, July 3rd, 1866, in Marshall County, Illinois. Mr. Hollenback was born April 1st, 1845, in Woodford County, Illinois. A farmer. They moved to Gage County, Nebraska, in November 1883. In 1898 they moved into the town of Blue Springs, in the same county, having a farm near by and a home in town. In October, 1914, Mr. Hollenback was stricken with paralysis which rendered him entirely helpless for the rest of his life, a little over five years. He died November 7th, 1919.

1. Ellen Jane Hollenback; Born June 15th, 1867, in Woodford County, Illinois. Married Francis Marion Layton, in Gage County, Nebraska, a farmer. Mr. Layton was born April 16th, 1864, at Decatur, Illinois. They settled near Odell, Nebraska, and later moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to educate their children. They then returned to Gage County, locating at Beatrice and Mr. Layton engaged in the real estate business. In 1917 he and the two sons went to Wyoming and filed on homesteads, and at this date, 1920, they are in that country.

(1) Iva Marie Layton; Born November 21st, 1891, at Odell, Nebraska. Educated at Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Nebraska. Specialized in Domestic Science at Nebraska State Farm, and is a successful teacher in that line. Graduated from Nebraska State Normal in 1917.

2. Frank Rufus Hollenback; Born February 16th, 1871, in Woodford County, Illinois. Educated at Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Nebraska and at Drew Theological Seminary. A prominent minister in the M. E. Church. Now is District Superintendent of the M. E. Church at Denver, Colorado. Married Eva Mabel Shock, June 22nd, 1897.

(1) Frank Robert Hollenback; Born February 26th, 1911, at Denver, Colorado. Two infants of 1900 and 1901 died.

3. Bertha Estella Hollenback; Born March 15th, 1877, in Woodford County, Illinois. Unmarried. Bertha has been a mainstay to her parents in the several last years of her father's affliction. She and her mother expect soon to located in Denver, that they may be near her brother in her mother's old age.

V. Elizabeth Jane Gilcrest; Born September 4th, 1846, at Paintersville, Greene County, Ohio. Married Benjamin Franklin James, December 22nd, 1868, in Marshall County, Illinois. Mr. James was born in that County, November 18th, 1843. His calling was farmer and stock raiser, in Marshall and Woodford counties, Illinois, till 1882, when they moved to Spink County, South Dakota. years they engaged in dairy business, at Yankton, South Dakota, then at Amarillo, Texas, where they still live. Mr. James died December 1st, 1922, at Amarillo, Texas.

1. Ida May James; Born April 9th, 1870, in Marshall County, Illinois. Taught in South Dakota in 1892 and 1893. Married Henry Orth Krug, November 5th, 1902, at Avon, South Dakota, a farmer. He was born in Juniatta County, Pennsylvania. Located in South Dakota in 1892.

VI. Robert Alexander Gilcrest; Born May 28th, 1850, at Paintersville, Greene County, Ohio. Brought up on the farm in Union County, Ohio, and Marshall County, Illinois. Educated at Eureka College, Eureka, Illinois, and Butler College, Indianapolis, Indiana, A. B. and A. M. Taught in common and graded schools eight years. Entered the ministry in 1879. Served churches at Albion, Lincoln and Watseka, Illinois, and Centerville, Iowa. Was President of West Kentucky College, at Mayfield, Kentucky, 1888 and 1889. Professor of Mental Sciences and Philosophy and in Bible Department of Eureka College, Eureka, Illinois, from 1895 to 1900.

Married Sarah Ann Kylander April 16th, 1874, in Marshall County, Illinois. Sarah was born July 4th, 1851, at Georgetown, Brown County, Ohio. She died February 3rd, 1880, at Albion, Illinois. There were three children of this marriage, two surviving.

1. Paul Angelo Gilcrest; Born February 3rd, 1875, in Marshall County, Illinois. Educated at common schools and High School, Centerville, Iowa, and one year in Eureka College. Learned banking business at Centerville, Iowa. Joined the 50th Iowa Regiment in the Cuban campaign. Was Lieutenant in New York National Guards, later. Worked in railroad auditing office from Delaware, Lackawanna and Western for several years, at Buffalo, New York. With Haskens & Sells, Public Accountants, Chicago for several years. Then with Deere & Co., Moline, Illinois, as auditor of factories, and with Moline Plow Company as Comptroller. Now 1924, assistant manager of Hawkins & Sells, Chicago office.

Married Margaret Lay, April 12th, 1924, at Evanston, Illinois.

2. Guy Guthrie Gilcrest; Born September 4th, 1876, at Stanford, McLean County, Illinois. Educated in common schools and at High School, Centerville, Iowa. Entered Centerville National Bank, where he worked about sixteen years, becoming Assistant Cashier. Was a member of the Iowa National Guards. Color Sergeant in 50th Iowa, in the Cuban Campaign. Accountant for Munitions Works in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917 and 1918. Now a division clerk in the Soldiers' Insurance Office, Washington, D. C. 1919 later in Internal Revenue Department, Income Tax Bureau. He married Grace Alma Baker, April 29th, 1898 in Des Moines, Iowa. Grace was

born December 28th, 1875, in Lucas County, Iowa. A teacher. Now has civil service position in War Department, Washington, D. C.

VII. Mary Rebecca Gilcrest; Born January 18th, 1853, at Paintersville, Greene County, Ohio. Married to Nathan P. Hollenback, January 6th, 1874, in Woodford County, Illinois. Died November 19th, 1916, near Washington, Nebraska.

2. George T. Hollenback; Born August 28th, 1878, in Woodford County, Illinois. Died December 22nd, 1889, in Gage County, Nebraska.

3. Carl E. Hollenback; Born January 6th, 1880, in Woodford County, Illinois. Married Elizabeth Eleanor Drake, a milliner, June 7th, 1908, in Spokane, Washington. Elizabeth was born March 30th, 1881, in Muscatine County, Iowa. She died January 7th, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. His second marriage was to Velma Patience Roadman, at Cedar Falls, Iowa., October 7th, 1914. Velma was born July 20th, 1879, in Grundy County, Iowa. Carl has been with Eiler Music House, in Spokane, for several years and is now, 1918, assistant manager and a stock holder. Later he established a piano rental business of his own.

Took up the trade of carpenter and has followed wood working of some kind most of his life. Married Ida May Ebert, a daughter of O. Ebert, Christian minister, May 11th, 1884. Ida May was born July 13th, at Logansport, Indiana. Died October 4, 1923.
