I. Samuel Guthrie Gilcrest; Born February 1st, 1837, in Guernsey County, Ohio. As a young man he taught in McLean County, Illinois. In 1862 he was in Union County, Ohio, and started in his life of farming and stock raising. Married Elizabeth Longbrake, September 9th, 1862, near Marysville, in that county. She was born in Union County, September 30th, 1844. When they retired from the farm they lived in Marysville. He died in Cambridge, Ohio, while visiting in the home of a granddaughter, March 8th, 1918. His widow survives and makes her home in Marysville.

II. William Smith Gilcrest; Born July 15th, 1839, at New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. A farmer all of his life. Married Mary Ewings, at Rutland, Illinois, March 8th, 1866. He served a four months enlistment in the civil war, in Company H, 86th Ohio volunteers, Infantry. Moved from Illinois to Adair County, Iowa, in 1876; and thence to Akron, Colorado, in 1888, and took a homestead. In the fall of 1893 he had the misfortune to lose a foot by the accidental discharge of a shotgun. He spent the rest of his days on crutches. His health was delicate for several years, and he died at Akron, Colorado, March 27th, 1901. His widow still lives, (1923) at Kettle Falls, Washington.

III. Austin Gilcrest; Born April 19th, 1842, at New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. A farmer in his earlier days. Served in the civil war about a year, Company G, 129th Ohio Volunteers, Infantry. Most of that service was in the region of Cumberland Gap. Soon after he was mustered out his health failed seriously, and he was unable to work for about five years. When he became a little stronger he became a farm manager for an old farmer by the name of William Perkins for several years, both in Illinois and Iowa. Then for several years he was with his cousin, F. H. Gilcrest, at Kearney, Nebraska, in the lumber business. After his strength began to decline again he retired to the Soldiers' Home, at Leavenworth, Kansas, where he spent most of the time of his last nine years. Here he died May 13th, 1918. Austin never married . He was to have been married in 1870 but his long continued sickness decided them to give it up by mutual consent. His intended, also, never married. Living at Kansas City since 1913 it was my privilege to be with my brother a great deal during his declining days, and it was certainly a great pleasure to us both.

1845, at New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. Married William Albert Hollenback, July 3rd, 1866, in Marshall County, Illinois. Mr. Hollenback was born April 1st, 1845, in Woodford County, Illinois. A farmer. They moved to Gage County, Nebraska, in November 1883. In 1898 they moved into the town of Blue Springs, in the same county, having a farm near by and a home in town. In October, 1914, Mr. Hollenback was stricken with paralysis which rendered him entirely helpless for the rest of his life, a little over five years. He died November 7th, 1919.

1. Ellen Jane Hollenback; Born June 15th, 1867, in Woodford County, Illinois. Married Francis Marion Layton, in Gage County, Nebraska, a farmer. Mr. Layton was born April 16th, 1864, at Decatur, Illinois. They settled near Odell, Nebraska, and later moved to Lincoln, Nebraska to educate their children. They then returned to Gage County, locating at Beatrice and Mr. Layton engaged in the real estate business. In 1917 he and the two sons went to Wyoming and filed on homesteads, and at this date, 1920, they are in that country.

(1) Iva Marie Layton; Born November 21st, 1891, at Odell, Nebraska. Educated at Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Nebraska. Specialized in Domestic Science at Nebraska State Farm, and is a successful teacher in that line. Graduated from Nebraska State Normal in 1917.

Served churches at Albion, Lincoln and Watseka, Illinois, and Centerville, Iowa. Was President of West Kentucky College, at Mayfield, Kentucky, 1888 and 1889. Professor of Mental Sciences and Philosophy and in Bible Department of Eureka College, Eureka, Illinois, from 1895 to 1900.
Married Sarah Ann Kylander April 16th, 1874, in Marshall County, Illinois. Sarah was born July 4th, 1851, at Georgetown, Brown County, Ohio. She died February 3rd, 1880, at Albion, Illinois. There were three children of this marriage, two surviving.

Then with Deere & Co., Moline, Illinois, as auditor of factories, and with Moline Plow Company as Comptroller. Now 1924, assistant manager of Hawkins & Sells, Chicago office.

2. Guy Guthrie Gilcrest; Born September 4th, 1876, at Stanford, McLean County, Illinois. Educated in common schools and at High School, Centerville, Iowa. Entered Centerville National Bank, where he worked about sixteen years, becoming Assistant Cashier. Was a member of the Iowa National Guards. Color Sergeant in 50th Iowa, in the Cuban Campaign. Accountant for Munitions Works in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917 and 1918. Now a division clerk in the Soldiers' Insurance Office, Washington, D.
