    II. William Smith Gilcrest; Born July 15th, 1839, at New Athens, Harrison County, Ohio. A farmer all of his life. Married Mary Ewings, at Rutland, Illinois, March 8th, 1866. He served a four months enlistment in the civil war, in Company H, 86th Ohio volunteers, Infantry. Moved from Illinois to Adair County, Iowa, in 1876; and thence to Akron, Colorado, in 1888, and took a homestead. In the fall of 1893 he had the misfortune to lose a foot by the accidental discharge of a shotgun. He spent the rest of his days on crutches. His health was delicate for several years, and he died at Akron, Colorado, March 27th, 1901. His widow still lives, (1923) at Kettle Falls, Washington."
