Usage Tips

This data collection contains an index to Cook County, Illinois, marriages from 1912 through 1942. The majority of these records come from the years 1914-1923. The records in this collection list names for both bride and groom and the date of the marriage. The lists are arranged alphabetically by surname, with the brides and grooms mixed. The images will specify if the person was the bride or groom. Also provided is the marriage serial number which may be helpful in acquiring a copy of the original marriage record.

Marriage records were the first vital records recorded by Illinois counties, typically commencing with the formation of the county and continuing through the present. Cook County began recording marriages as early as 1856 [but many to almost all of the early Cook County records were lost in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 - PBK]. (From Carol L. Maki and Michael John Neil, “Illinois,” in Red Book: American State, County, and Town Sources, 3d ed., ed. Alice Eichholz [Provo, Utah: Ancestry, 2004].)
